Electronics major Samsung today said it aims to sell 380 million mobile phones this year globally.

The company unveiled new devices like Galaxy Beam and Galaxy Note 10.1 at the Mobile World Congress here as it looks to compete strongly against the likes of Apple and Nokia in the fast-growing smartphone and tablet PC market.

Samsung President and Head of Mobile Communications Business J K Shin also said the company aims to double the sales of its smartphones.

Samsung has been aggressively launching smartphones globally, including in India, and expects the segment to be a key driver for the mobile division.

The company has seen immense success with growth mainly driven by strong sales of its Galaxy range of devices.

According to IDC, Samsung shipped 36 million smartphones in Q4 2011 (22.8 per cent market share), up from 9.6 million units in the same period last year.

Samsung's share in the smartphone segment in Q4 2010 stood at 9.4 per cent.

Apple, which is the numero uno player in the smartphone segment as per IDC, shipped 37 million smartphones in Q4 2011 and accounted for 23.5 per cent of the segment.

The new 10.1-inch Galaxy Note is positioned as a cross-between Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab tablet in terms of functionality and features. It also allows users to jot down notes on the product with a specially designed pen.

Samsung to Spin Off LCD Business to Focus more on New TV Technology

South Korean giant Samsung Electronics said on Monday that its board has agreed to spin off its loss-making liquid crystal display (LCD) business.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of flat panels, memory chips and flat-screen televisions, said its LCD unit would be launched as a separate entity on April 1 with capital of 750 billion won ($668 million).

The LCD business suffered losses in every quarter last year due to a supply glut and cut-throat competition, but Samsung said in a statement the spin-off will help it streamline decision-making and manage resources more efficiently.

It "will allow us to make quicker business decisions and respond to our clients' needs more swiftly", said Park Dong-Gun, head of Samsung's LCD business.

"Through enhancements in business competitiveness, we will continue to provide superior products and services for the market."

Analysts have said the move would help Samsung invest further in profitable businesses such as smartphones, non-memory chips and next-generation panels.

Sony agrees to end LCD venture with Samsung for $940 million

Sony Corp has agreed to sell its nearly 50 percent stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics to Samsung for $940 million, the Korean firm said on Monday, as Sony struggles to staunch red ink at its TV business.

The venture cut its capital by 15 percent in July and industry sources had said Sony was negotiating an exit, aiming to switch to cheaper outsourcing for flat screens for its TVs while Samsung pushes ahead with next-generation displays.

Sony warned in November of a fourth straight year of losses for the financial year to next March, with its TV unit alone set to lose $2.2 billion on tumbling demand and a surging yen.

The maker of Bravia TVs and PlayStation game consoles said at the time it would revamp its LCD panel procurement but did not comment on the outlook for the LCD venture with Samsung.

"In terms of direction it is positive," said Keita Wakabayashi, an analyst at Mito Securities in Tokyo. "But if they are making a loss on the sale, one could ask why they didn't make this decision sooner."

Some analysts say the $100 billion LCD TV market peaked last year and forecast it will shrink 3 to 4 percent annually, as consumers in advanced countries have already traded in their bulky cathode-ray tube TV sets for flat screens, while the LCD market has been in a glut since last summer.

Sony said in April it would not raise its stake in a separate LCD venture with Sharp Corp for at least a year, and in October signaled a stepped-up push into the smart phone market by announcing it would take control of its mobile phone joint venture with Ericsson for $1.5 billion.

The company is hoping to exploit its music and video applications to help it catch up with smartphone leaders such as Apple Inc.

Sony said on Monday it would report a 66 billion yen ($856 million) impairment loss for the October-December quarter but expected to cut 50 billion yen in annual costs in the LCD business by ending the venture with Samsung.

Sony holds a nearly 50 percent stake in the venture, S-LCD, which was established in April 2004 to secure stable supplies for Sony's flat-screen TVs.

Seagate acquires Samsung HDD Business

The US-based hard disk supplier Seagate Technology said it has completed the acquisition of Samsung Electronic's hard-disk drive (HDD) business.

Seagate had announced acquisition of Samsung's HDD business in April for USD 1.4 billion in a cash and stock deal. Under the deal, Samsung will transfer the HDD business to Seagate and in return will get about a 9.6 percent stake or 45.2 million shares of Seagate valued at USD 687.5 Million.

Seagate has gained the elements of Samsung's HDD business, including assets, infrastructure and employees that enable the company to drive scale and innovation, Seagate said in a statement here.

The deal will substantially expand Seagate's access in China, Southeast Asia, Brazil, Germany and Russia, while it will increase significantly the ownership position of Samsung in Seagate.

Seagate will retain certain Samsung HDD products under the Samsung brand name for the next 12 months, and maintain or establish a number of independent operations including sales staff, key production lines and R&D, it added.

"Together, Seagate and Samsung have aligned our current and future product development efforts and roadmaps to accelerate time-to-market efficiency for new products and position us to better address the increasing demands for storage," Seagate chairman, president and chief executive Steve Luczo said.

The companies have also extended and enhanced their existing patent cross-license agreement and expanded cooperation to co-develop enterprise storage solutions.

"The strategic relationship will open new opportunities for the two companies by mutually complementing each other's creative technology solutions for a broad diversity of IT applications," Samsung vice-chairman for device solutions Oh-Hyun Kwon said.

Samsung to sell Galaxy tablets in Australia - It's Merry Christmas for Samsung in Australia

Apple won a ban on the devices, claiming Samsung had copied its iPhone and iPad.

South Korean Samsung had been unable to sell products in Australia since July.

The two companies are engaged in legal battles in more than 10 countries since April accusing each other of infringing smartphone and tablet patents.

In a blow for Samsung, Australia's Federal Court in October placed a temporary sales ban on the sale of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 ahead of a final hearing that's expected to occur early next year. The ruling was overturned on appeal but Apple applied to the High Court to have the ban reinstated.

"Apple's application for special leave to appeal was dismissed with costs," a spokeswoman for the High Court said Friday.

Samsung said in a statement that the tablet "will be available in stores in time for the Christmas shopping period" but didn't name a specific date.

This is using the Android GingerBread Operating system, version 2.3 with dual core processor.

It has 8 MP camera using which you can take very nice pictures. The picture quality has been found to be good both during day and night time.

The attracting feature is we can mark the google earth using the stylus they have provided and send to our friend the message to meet us there. No need to type the place and text it you see ;)

The stylus does a lot of other stuffs which you can watch in the video down.

APPS STORED
If you use this for a call in public places, its obvious that all will be watching you. :D Nobody can miss you because of the size it has. This may be uncomfortable for some persons especially people with small hands. But for messaging and other purposes, the big screen scores high.

Google opens Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone in India

India may figure among the 18 select countries where technology giant Google would launch its upcoming smartphone Galaxy Nexus, widely being billed as an iPhone-killer, in its first phase later this month.

Google aims to make available this device, which would rival technology major Apple's smartphone iPhone, later this month in the US, Canada, and select European and Asian countries.

To start with, Google has launched specific web pages for India and 17 other countries, where prospective customers can register for getting further updates about the various features and availability status of Galaxy Nexus.

Apart from India, other countries which will receive the upcoming smartphone in the first phase are--- Australia, Brazil, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Portugal, the US, the UK, Taiwan, Thailand and Netherlands.

Galaxy Nexus would be based on the latest version of Google's flagship Android mobile operating system, named Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

The device would have features like 1.2 GHz dual core processor, 4.65 inch HD display and the facility of fourth generation telephony services.

"With Ice Cream Sandwich, our mission was to build a mobile OS that works on both phones and tablets, and to make the power of Android enticing and intuitive," Google had said.

Samsung to launch flexible screen Mobile Phones in 2012

Samsung‘s new mobile device lineup will feature flexible screens starting in 2012, the company announced today.

In its quarterly earnings call, Samsung’s vice president of investor relations, Robert Yi, told investors, analysts and press, “The flexible display we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part. The application probably will start from the handset side.”

After flexible-screen mobile phones roll out, the company plans to introduce the same technology for tablets and other devices.

In January 2011, Samsung purchased Liquivista, a strategic acquisition that will allow it to produce the kinds of displays that were announced today. Liquivista made electrowetting display technology, which is used to create mobile and other consumer electronic displays that are bright, low-power, flexible and transparent.

Flexible screen technology was also a focus of Samsung’s in March, when Yongsuk Choi, director of Samsung Mobile Display, gave an overview of the company’s future mobile device plans. At that time, Choi said most of the flexible-display technology Samsung was working on was still in very early stages.

Samsung beats Apple in Smartphone Sale

For the first time, Samsung Electronics Co shipped more smartphones in the latest quarter than tech industry darling Apple Inc. On the surface, this may look like a big upset in a world that affords the iPhone maker adulation and outsized expectations. The real reason, however, has more to do with timing and Samsung's variety of offerings and prices.

Apple sold 17.1 million iPhones in the third quarter, 3 million fewer than expected. Samsung, meanwhile, shipped more than 27 million, according to analyst estimates.

So what happened?
For one, Apple's latest iPhone, the 4S, didn't come out until the quarter ended, so its sales are not included in the figure. People held back on buying older models in anticipation of the new iPhone, which came out Oct. 14. Apple said it sold more than 4 million units in its first weekend on sale, and that should be reflected in the tally for the current, holiday quarter.

"People were waiting," said Francis Sideco, analyst with the research firm IHS. "We don't see this as a signal that Apple is all of a sudden losing its edge. It's their normal thing. But while they are doing this normal thing, Samsung is (going strong) and they happen to have a really good quarter."

Samsung's quarter was helped by strong sales of its Galaxy phones, though Sideco said the numbers shouldn't lead to the conclusion that the Samsung Galaxy beat the Apple iPhone.

"What beat it is Samsung's lines," Sideco said.

Besides the Galaxy line, Samsung's phones include Conquer, Replenish, Focus and Indulge. IHS estimates that Samsung sold about 40 different models during the third quarter. By comparison, Apple had just two - the 4 and the 3GS.

Samsung, which is based in Seoul, South Korea, does not disclose the number of phones it ships. IHS, formerly known as iSuppli, estimates that Samsung shipped 27.3 million smartphones in the latest quarter. Jae Lee from Daiwa Securities puts the figure at about 28 million.

Analysts cautioned against reading too much into the numbers, but such comparisons are tempting given the pedestal that Apple is held on and the fact that the rivalry between the two companies has heated up and extended into the courtroom. Apple says the product design, user interface and packaging of Samsung's Galaxy devices "slavishly copy" the iPhone and Apple's iPad tablet computer. Samsung fought back with lawsuits of its own, accusing Apple of patent infringement of its wireless telecommunications technology.

Even as Samsung sold more phones, Apple seems to be making more money on each. That's one of the reasons Apple is now the most valuable tech company in the world, with a market value about three times that of Samsung.

Apple competes on - and dominates - the high-end smartphone market. By contrast, Samsung has both cheap and expensive phones available. That means Samsung can appeal to a broader range of customers, but the company has to settle for a lower profit margin on lower-end smartphones.

Sideco called both strategies good. Good, but different.

Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, limits the market it addresses because it is safeguarding its profit margin on the iPhone, said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. More expensive phones mean higher margins for the company, which so far hasn't focused on the market for lower-end phones.

"It's part of their plan," Milanesi said. "If they wanted to capture a wider segment of the market, they would go with a lower-end device."

That could come soon. The price cut earlier this month for the iPhone 4 to $99 (down from $199) and the decision to offer now-ancient 3GS for free - with a two-year service contract - could mean that Apple is testing the waters in the cheaper market.

"The sales of the $99 iPhone 4 will definitely help widen the addressable market," Milanesi said.

When it comes to the overall mobile phone market, though neither Apple nor Samsung are on top. That honor goes to Nokia Corp. The Finnish company is still the world's No. 1 cellphone maker even though it has fallen behind rivals in the smartphone market. Nokia shipped 16.8 million smartphones during the third quarter, a close third to Apple, according to IHS.

Samsung Electronics unveiled its newest Galaxy Nexus smartphone Wednesday, the first to use the latest version of Google's Android operating system - Ice cream Sandwich.

The new phone is seen to be the Samsung-Google partnership's rival to Apple's iPhone 4S, which in less than a week on the market has already sold more than 4 million units.

----------------Samsung's Google Nexus Technical Specifications Look Here---------------

At a glitzy unveiling in Hong Kong, Google executive Andy Rubin said Android's latest "Ice Cream Sandwich" operating system demonstrates innovation "that works on phones and tablets and everything in between."

Rubin said features like Android Beam and Face Unlock showcased Ice Cream Sandwich's capabilities.

Android Beam allows transfer of data between two smartphones by holding them together, while Face Unlock uses facial recognition technology to activate smartphones, rather than conventional passwords.

However, during a demonstration at the Hong Kong unveiling, the Face Unlock feature failed to activate the Galaxy Nexus.

Executives of South Korea's Samsung said the Galaxy Nexus will go on sale in November in the U.S., Europe and Asia, including China and Japan. They did not reveal the new smartphone's price or its sales volume targets.

Samsung seeks Apple's iPhone Ban in France

Samsung on Monday confirmed that it recently filed a new complaint against Apple in France, alleging that the Cupertino-based company’s iPad and iPhone devices infringe on three Samsung-owned patents. Unlike the case that recently saw a German judge ban sales of Samsung’s GALAXY Tab 10.1 tablet by the company’s local arm, Samsung’s complaint in France covers patents rather than the physical design of the devices in question. The suit targets Apple’s iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G as well as the iPad and iPad 2, and the patents in question cover the UMTS communication standard according to AFP. The complaint was first filed in July and a preliminary hearing will take place in December.

Windows phone

Announcing the launch of Windows Phone in India, Mr. Bhaskar Pramanik, Chairman, Microsoft India said, "We are incredibly excited about today's unveiling of Windows Phone. With Windows Phone, we have looked at the consumer experience  in an absolutely fresh way, and the end result is an operating system that is  stylish,  innovative,  and  one that seamlessly integrates the  most sought after user experiences such as search, gaming, email and social networks across Bing, Office, Xbox LIVE, Facebook, Twitter and more."

In his presentation, Bhaskar Pramanik also mentioned that Microsoft is working with content publishers and businesses in India for apps for India-specific content and services. He showcased Times of India and Snapdeal.com apps which would soon be available in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

The Windows Phone launch included executives from hardware partners for Windows Phone - Nokia, HTC, Samsung, Acer, and Qualcomm. Microsoft announced a range of Windows Phone devices that will be available in India soon. While HTC Radar would be available in the markets starting next week for INR 23,990, Samsung Omnia W and Acer Allegro would be available in November. Samsung had earlier this month announced the price for Omnia W as INR 19,990. Subsequently, Nokia would also launch Windows Phone devices in India, and other countries.

Speaking about analyst predictions of Windows Phone being the No.2 smartphone platform by 2015, Vikas Arora, Group Director - Operator Channel, Microsoft, said that he'll be disappointed with No.2 position. He obviously would be taking cognisance of the fact that even though it's a crowded market, it is a steeply growing market. While Microsoft is confident of the product and the reviews are great, it would be a tough challenge to penetrate iPhone's hype, BlackBerry's enterprise hold, and a market flooded with Android devices at every price point.
