Aakash II launching in April at same price - Will Aakash 1 delivered to Pre-Ordered uses?

A faster, upgraded version of Aakash tablet -- touted to be the world's cheapest -- would be launched in April without any increase in price, Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal said.

Sibal said during Question Hour in Lok Sabha that Datawind will supply one lakh high speed tablets with a longer battery life and better screen.

"These higher specifications which include 700 MHz Cortex A8 processor, 3200mAH battery with three-hour usage time and a capacitative touchscreen have been necessitated to overcome the initial difficulties observed in the devices," he said.

The first phase of one lakh tablets were targeted for students in higher technical education institutions so as to further ascertain technical feedback on its operation and usability, the minister said.

To demands from members for extending the distribution of tablets to school students, Sibal said the same would be made available when the proposed National Mission of Education through ICT for Schools got necessary funds.

He said once the production capacities are built up, norms for distribution with an aim to prioritise empowerment of students, especially from disadvantaged and marginalised sections of society, through this low cost access-cum computing device would get developed.

But Doubts are still there whether Aakash one will be delivered to the Pre-ordered Customers. Will Government answer for this?

RCom unveils first CDMA tablet at Rs 12,999

Reliance Communications has launched the country’s first CDMA network technology driven tablet computers. This comes after seven months of launching its tablets in 3G networks.

Priced at Rs 12,999, the tablet works on Reliance High Speed Data CDMA network in over 1,000 towns, said Mr Rakesh Singh, Hub Head, Wireless Business, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Reliance Communication. “We are the first telecom operator in India to offer tablet on both the 3G and CDMA networks. This will strengthen our leadership position in tablet,” he told newspersons without any company specific numbers.

In mobile service, two main competing network technologies that telecom companies use are Global System for Mobile Communications and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).

The 7-inch Reliance CDMA Tab is a fully loaded Android tablet. It is also loaded with 512 MB RAM and a micro SD external storage and support up to 32 GB of content storage. It comes with a 2.0 MP rear camera and a front camera catering to both businessmen and the youth.

Mr Rajaram said that the tablet is pre-loaded with 15 most popular applications to provide information services, communication services, entertainment and social networking.

As an introductory offer, the tablet is available with post paid plans offering discounts of up to 40 per cent on the regular rates. All the plans will come with default voice tariff plan of 50p per minute for all intra and inter cities and 50p for local and national SMS.

While Reliance has coverage of 300 cities in the 3G network, it has coverage of over 1,000 towns in the CDMA networks, which will provide broadband access of Internet with a speed of over 3 MBPS.

The tablet penetration in India is likely to reach 8.3 lakh units by 2015 from the present 1.6 lakh. However, to reach that figure, pricing will be an important factor. With a price of Rs 12,999, the Reliance tablet offers an ‘attractive proposition’ for consumers, he said.

There are over 30 tablet brands available in India with price ranging between Rs 24,000 and Rs 46,000. There is a demand for sub Rs 20,000, he said.

Apple rules Tablet market with 73% - Android trails at 5%

Apple Inc, set to release a new iPad tablet tomorrow, doesn't have an Android-based competitor with more than 5 per cent of the market, Forrester Research Inc said in a report.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, controls 73 per cent of the market, while Samsung Electronics Co, Sony Corp and Toshiba Corp are among companies making incremental improvements to tablets without bringing services that cut into the market share, Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at Forrester, said in the report.

Android-based tablets have been priced in the same range as iPads with inconsistent branding, Epps also said. Amazon Inc's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Inc's Nook tablets may vie for second place because they build features on top of Android without using the brand and sell for a lower price, she said.

"Tablets are about services," Epps said in a telephone interview. "That is where Amazon has succeeded where others have failed."

When Forrester carried out its survey in September, Hewlett-Packard Co was in second place to Apple with 6 per cent of the tablet market, followed by Samsung Electronics Co, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc and Acer Inc, with 5 per cent, 4 per cent and 3 per cent respectively. HP cut the price of its TouchPads to $99 before it stopped selling them.

About one-third of the US adult population will own a tablet by 2016, as more people bring them to their workplaces, according to Forrester. The majority of tablets used for work are paid for by the employee, the research company also said.

"This market is growing faster than we expected -- faster than anyone expected," Epps said. In September, before Amazon's Kindle Fire was released, 24 per cent of consumers surveyed said they would buy a tablet made by Amazon, compared with 61 per cent who said they would buy an iPad and 21 per cent who said they would buy a Samsung tablet, Forrester said.

Apple is expected to release an iPad with a high-definition screen, a faster processor and compatibility with next-generation wireless networks, people familiar with the product said in January.

Apple sends Invitation for March 7, 2012 Event ; World expects iPad 3 to launched

Apple is expected to unveil a new version of the iPad at an event in San Francisco next week.

Apple sent out invitations to news media on Tuesday with an image showing part of an iPad screen. The company had been widely expected to reveal the third version of its popular tablet computer soon, close to the anniversary of the launch of the iPad 2.

The event will take place next Wednesday at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where Apple holds larger launch events.

Since the first iPad came out in 2010, sales of traditional computers have slowed in the U.S. and other wealthy countries. Rival PC and phone makers have been unable to mirror Apple’s success with their own tablet computers. Apple has sold 55 million iPads so far, about the same as the estimated number of Mac computers in use.

Apple Inc. didn’t provide any details on the new device. Various unconfirmed reports speak of a sharper screen and faster cellular broadband options.

It’s not known when such a new device would be available for sale. Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the U.S. nine days after the announcement.

Huawei unveils world's first Quad-Core 10-inch tablet

Chinese Telecom Giant Huawei is offering a quad-core 10in entertainment tablet.
The product has appeared at Mobile World Congress (MWC) and tips up in an excited press announcement where we learn that it is the world's first 10in quad-core tablet.

Exciting, unless of course you have the Asus Transformer, which is a quad core tablet but has a 10.1in screen, or ZTE's just announced quad-core Tegra 3 tablet, the ZTE PF 100, which also boasts a 10.1in display.

Back in the world in which Huawei exists, the Mediapad 10 FHD has Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and some other shiny features that should appeal to consumers.

"Most consumers use tablets for entertainment purposes such as gaming, viewing multimedia content, browsing the internet and reading e-books," said Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei Device.

"We have created the HUAWEI Mediapad 10 FHD to excel in all of the entertainment capabilities including speed, power, web-browsing, high definition display and audio, and packaging it all in a compact and portable body."

Later in its statement the firm seems to acknowledge that there is competition, adding, "The Huawei Mediapad 10 FHD is the fastest quad-core tablet available," and justifying this with the explanation that it uses its 1.5GHz K3 quad-core processor to boost games and video performance.

The Huawei Mediapad has 2GB of RAM, a high-definition 1920x1200 IPS display, an 8MP rear automatic-focus camera and a 1.3MP front-facing camera.

Netflix tweets "No" to Blackberry - including Playbook

In response to a user who asked about a possible Netflix app for the BlackBerry Playbook tablet, Netflix's Twitter support account replied that the company has no current plans to support BlackBerry devices, including the Playbook. Crackberry.com spotted the tweet, and is encouraging BlackBerry loyalists to voice their outrage.

A lack of apps continues to be RIM's biggest problem, especially now that Playbook OS 2.0 has filled in many of the tablet's missing features, such as a native e-mail, calendar, and contacts apps. Without apps for popular services such as Yelp, Spotify, Kindle, Hulu, and Netflix, RIM will have a tough time convincing consumers that its app store is thriving.

Although Playbook OS 2.0 supports Android apps through an emulator, developers must still submit their apps to RIM for approval. It's not yet clear whether Netflix or other streaming video services will go that route.

Of course, things can change, and sometimes “we don't have any current plans” is just PR speak for “we have plans that we're not announcing yet.” But as it stands, Netflix's disinterest in BlackBerry isn't a good sign.

Netflix has more than 24 million U.S. subscribers, where it offers both a mail-in service and streaming movies and TV shows. It also has also expanded its streaming-only service to Canada and parts of Latin America.

Upgraded Aakash to be launched in April/May says Purendeswari,Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development

The upgraded version of Aakash tablet -- touted to be the world's cheapest -- would be launched in April or May without hike in price, said Dr D Purendeswari, Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, here today.

She was talking to PTI after attending National HRD Conclave organised by Federation of Gujarat Industries here.

The new tablet was completely indigenous, and defects noticed in the earlier version had been rectified, she said.

Kapil Sibal, Union HRD Minister, had said a few days ago that there were some "problems" with the original manufacturer Datawind, and the company would not be associated with the tablet anymore.

RIM finally brings Email in Blackberry Playbook

Research in Motion, the company that introduced wireless email to the world, on Tuesday finally brought email to its tablet computer, the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The email application is one of several additions to the second version of the PlayBook's operating system, which became available as a no-cost download early Tuesday morning. There was considerable surprise last April that the PlayBook, the company's answer to the Apple iPad, initially could send or receive emails only by being connected to a BlackBerry phone.

The much-delayed upgrade that corrects that omission also allows the PlayBook to run some apps developed for devices that use Google's Android operating system. And it includes some novel features for automatically integrating information and messages from social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, with its email, calendar and contact apps.

With the software upgrade, owners of BlackBerry phones will also be able to use the familiar keyboard on their handsets as a physical keyboard for the PlayBook through a wireless connection.

While several analysts welcomed the arrival of the new operating system, they were also skeptical that it would make RIM a significant force in the tablet computer market or inspire consumers to wait for a new, and also delayed, line of phones that will use similar software.

"It probably puts a couple of fingers in the dike," said Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, a unit of the Royal Bank of Canada. "While many of the updates are nice, albeit late, there isn't much to differentiate it from Android and iPad tablets."

Tero Kuittinen, a senior analyst at MGI Research, said that the changes would not be sufficient for the PlayBook to compete successfully with the third generation of the iPad, which is expected in March, or devices like Amazon's Kindle Fire.

"Nothing matters anymore; it's over," he said. "It's going to be fairly impossible for RIM to do anything."

While the new software plugs the biggest gaps in the PlayBook, it nevertheless failed to bring all of the features found on BlackBerry phones to the PlayBook. Most notably, the upgrade lacks BlackBerry Messenger, RIM's instant messaging service.

Several RIM executives, including Thorsten Heins, the new chief executive, have repeatedly said that BlackBerry Messenger was one of the most popular and important features on its phones. The company has been vague about the reasons for its continued absence on the PlayBook.

Datawind, the manufacture of Aakash Version 1 is out of Aakash project

Datawind, the Canadian company that was involved in the production of the world’s cheapest tablet Aakash will no longer be associated with the project, Telecom and HRD minister Kapil Sibal said on Monday.

The government has roped in the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and state-owned telecom equipment manufacturer Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) to further the development of the tablet computer. The minister said improved version of the tablet would be fully indigenous and would be launched soon at the same price.

"There have been some problems with Datawind, I must confess. Therefore, I have got into the act. IT ministry has got C-DAC and ITI into the act and I am going to ensure that this product is fully indigenous and truly an Indian product," he said.
A spokesperson of Datawind said the company “does not have any communication from the HRD ministry about this development.” To a query by Business Standard, ITI CMD K L Dhingra said the company was yet to get any official communication from the ministry. He, however, said ITI was quite capable of handling a project of this scale.

Originally developed by the Indian Institute of Technology-Rajasthan, Aakash tablet is available to students at Rs 1,100 after the government subsidy. So far, the manufacturing company Datawind has delivered 10,000 tablets to the Government of India. The project, however, ran into rough weather with allegations that it was using outdated technology with inadequate specifications. Besides, questions were also raised about the handling of tenders for the project by an educational institute like IIT-Rajasthan.

The Union HRD minister said the next version of the tablet Aakash-II would be launched sometime in the ongoing year. "Well, 2012... Aakash-II should be launched. There have been some hiccups in the way. Remember when you do a project of this nature and when your dream is as big as this, things are never that smooth."

Welcoming competition from market for development of the tablet, Sibal said the ultimate objective was to give a quality product to the children.

Pakistan AirForce making their own iPad tablets - PACPAD

Inside a high-security air force complex that builds jet fighters and weapons systems, Pakistan's military is working on the latest addition to its sprawling commercial empire: a homegrown version of the iPad.

It's a venture that bundles together Pakistani engineering and Chinese hardware, and shines a light on the military's controversial foothold in the consumer market. Supporters say it will boost the economy as well as a troubled nation's self-esteem.

It all comes together at an air force base in Kamra in northern Pakistan, where avionics engineers -- when they're not working on defense projects -- assemble the PACPAD 1.

"The original is the iPad, the copy is the PACPAD,'' said Mohammad Imran, who stocks the product at his small computer and cell phone shop in a mall in Rawalpindi, a city not far from Kamra and the home of the Pakistani army.

The device runs on Android 2.3, an operating system made by Google and given away for free. At around $200, it's less than half the price of Apple or Samsung devices and cheaper than other low-end Chinese tablets on the market, with the bonus of a local, one-year guarantee.

The PAC in the name stands for the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, where it is made. The PAC also makes an e-reader and small laptop.

Such endeavors are still at the pilot stage and represent just a sliver of the military's business portfolio, which encompasses massive land holdings, flour and sugar mills, hotels, travel agents, even a brand of breakfast cereal.

The military is powerful, its businesses are rarely subject to civilian scrutiny, and it has staged three coups since Pakistan became a state in 1947. Many Pakistanis find its economic activities corrupting and say it should focus on entirely on defense.

"I just can't figure it out,'' said Jehan Ara, head of Pakistan's Software Houses Association, said of the PACPAD. "Even if they could sell a billion units, I can't see the point. The air force is supposed to be protecting the air space and borders of the country.''

Supporters say the foray into information technology is a boost to national pride for a country vastly overshadowed by archrival India in the high-tech field. Tech websites in the country have shown curiosity or cautious enthusiasm, but say it's too early to predict how the device will perform. Skeptics claim it's a vanity project that will never see mass production.

Only a few hundred of each products has been made so far, though a new batch will be completed in the next three months.

"The defense industry is trying to justify its presence by doing more than just produce weapons,'' said Ayesha Siddiqa, author of Military Inc, a critical study of military businesses. "Some smart aleck must have thought we can make some money here.''

PAC's website at http://www.cpmc.pk says the goal is "strengthening the national economy through commercialization'' and lauds the collaboration with China -- something that likely resonates among nationalists.

China is regarded as a firm ally by Pakistan's security establishment, whereas the US, despite pouring billions of dollars in aid into the country, is seen as fickle and increasingly as an enemy.

These perceptions have heightened as the US intensifies drone attacks on militants based in the Pakistani borderlands. But the military is also a target of those militants. In 2007 the base at Kamra, home to 12,000 workers and their families, nine people died when a cyclist blew himself up at the entrance.

PAC officials suggested the program that produces the PACPAD was modeled in part on the Chinese military's entry into commercial industry, which lasted two decades until it was ordered to cut back lest it become corrupted and lose sight of its core mission.

The tablet and other devices are made in a low-slung facility, daubed in camouflage paint, near, a factory that produces J-17 Thunder fighter jets with Chinese help.

"It's about using spare capacity. There are 24 hours in a day, do we waste them or use them to make something?'' said Sohail Kalim, PAC's sales director. "The profits go to the welfare of the people here. There are lots of auditors. They don't let us do any hanky-panky here.''

PAC builds the PACPAD with a company called Innavtek in a Hong Kong-registered partnership that also builds high-tech parts for the warplanes.

But basic questions go unanswered. Maqsood Arshad, a retired air force officer who is one of the directors, couldn't say how much money had been invested, how many units the venture hoped to sell and what the profit from each sale was likely to be.

The market for low-cost Android tablets is expanding quickly around the world, with factories in China filling most of the demand. Last year, an Indian company produced the "Aakash'' tablet, priced at $50, and sold largely to schoolchildren and students.

Arshad said a second-generation PACPAD would be launched in the next three months, able to connect to the Internet via cell phone networks and other improved features. He said the Kamra facility could produce up to 1,000 devices a day.

During a brief test, The tablet with its 7-inch screen appeared to run well and the screen responsiveness was sharp. "It seems good, but operation-wise I have to look into it,'' said Mohammad Akmal, who had come to the store in Rawalpindi to check the product out. "Within a month or so, we will know.''

Amazon sells 3.9 million tablets in Q4 2011

Amazon.com shipped nearly 3.9 million Kindle Fire tablets in the last three months of 2011, making the online retail giant the world's second-largest tablet maker in the quarter, market research firm IHS said Thursday.

With the soaring sales of Kindle Fire, Amazon captured 14.3 percent of the global tablet market share in the quarter, surpassing Samsung Electronics to take the No. 2 position, according to a new report by IHS.

Apple remained the dominant player in the tablet market, shipping 15.4 million iPads, but its share dropped to 57 percent in the fourth quarter from 64 percent in the previous three months, said Xinhua.

The debut performance of the Kindle Fire, which hit the market only in mid-November of 2011, played a strong role in Apple's share shift, but it was Apple's own newly introduced iPhone 4S smartphone that proved to be the strongest competitor for the iPad, IHS analysts noted.

"The rollout of the iPhone 4S in October (in 2011) generated intense competition for Apple purchasers' disposable income, doing more to limit iPad shipment growth than competition from the Kindle Fire and other media tablets," Rhoda Alexander, senior manager of tablet and monitor research for IHS, said in a statement.

Looking forward, analysts predicted that Apple will reclaim its tablet market share when it starts to sell the next version of the iPad, which is expected in the second quarter of this year.

As for Kindle Fire, the long-term viability of the product will hinge on the success of Amazon's business gamble, "which depends on tablet sales driving substantial new online merchandise sales at Amazon.com in order to attain profitability", Alexander said.

PJ Gurumohan, founder and chief executive officer, GENWI, said, “With the power of the cloud, Tweek will save time and production costs by reusing design layouts from week to week--all in standard web-based protocols such as HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. But, the most groundbreaking aspect of the application is the way it surfaces existing content and takes full advantage of the tablet experience to create higher levels of reader engagement and the flexibility to explore new monetisation channels.”

A note from the company informed that Tweek also enables the reader to not just read a story, but also listen to, watch it and thus, experience the content. Patience Request Letter - from President & CEO DataWind Ltd.

Since the Order of the upgraded commercial version of Aakash - Ubislate 7+ exceeding the limits analyzed by Market Analysts, Datawind is in a tough position to address this issue of delivering this massive count of Tablets. It's still doubtful how can Datawind send out Tablets to all those who pre-ordered it.

Here we got a letter from CEO Of Datawind requesting Patience from it's customers.

Patience Requested
Dear Friends,
Please allow me this opportunity to thank you personally for the encouragement and generous support you’ve been showing for the past many months.  Along with you, we’re very excited by this journey on which we’ve embarked to bridge the digital divide, by delivering low-cost computing and internet devices at breakthrough prices.

The response has been overwhelming.  While industry analysts were forecasting only 250,000 tablet computers for the Indian market in 2012, our pre-booking rate is now averaging over 100,000 individual enduser sales each day and have cumulatively exceeded over two million.  With tens of thousands of calls daily to our call-centre, we are unable to adequately respond to all the queries we are receiving. As we work with extreme urgency to build-up our response capacity, if you have difficulty in getting through to our toll-free number, please fill-in the query forms on this website or Email us at supportin@datawind.com, and we will revert back to you at the earliest.

Thank you for your continued patience.

14 lakh Aakash Tablets booked in 14 days - Aakash - Indian's iPad

The new year may be a year of low-cost computing in India. Sales bookings for the world's cheapest tablet, Aakash, have soared to 14 lakh units just two weeks after it was put up for sale online for Rs 2,500 a piece.

To cater to the 'unexpected' demand, UK-based vendor Datawind, the maker of the $35 tablet, has decided to establish three new factories - in Cochin, Noida and Hyderabad - in the first half of 2012 to assemble the tablet. Datawind currently has only one factory in Hyderabad, with its vendor Quad, which makes the LCD panel for the tablet.

"We never expected such a high response from both corporate and individual buyers. We plan to supply 70,000-75,000 units per day once the factories are in place by April," Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, Datawind told ET from Panama, where he was invited to advise its government on its low-cost computing project.

"Around two weeks ago, we received a call from India's computer emergency response team that our website was probably suffering from a large cyber attack. We had to inform them we had just opened sale through our website," Tuli said. Datawind, which put out a limited 30,000 tablets for sale online with e-commerce provider Ncarry.com, has already exhausted the first lot.

A spokesman for Ncarry.com, said that the website is catering to orders across India, with delivery in 5-7 working days. Ncarry is a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Nimbuzz, which makes instant messaging applications. The Nimbuzz IM comes pre-installed on Aakash.

Pre-sales bookings for the Aakash tablet (about 400,000 in October) had surpassed the Indian tablet market which grossed about 250,000-300,000 tablets till last year.

Even with a resistive touch and slow processor, Aakash has received about 1 lakh orders a day since online launch last month. In comparison, Apple sold about 10 lakh iPads in 28 days and 30 lakh in 80 days of its launch in April 2010. Currently, the cheapest model of iPad at Rs 29,500, is about 12 times costlier than Aakash.

Blackberry PlayBook sold out completely in India @ 50% Offer - RIM extends festive offer by a week

Within days of slashing prices of its PlayBook tablet PC by almost half, Blackberry-maker RIM has said the device is sold out in retail outlets across the country, which has prompted it to extend the festive offer by a week.

"We are pleased to see the excitement and overwhelming response to our limited festive season offer on BlackBerry PlayBook. I believe that the 16-GB and 32-GB version of the PlayBook is completely sold out in the retail channels," Research In Motion Managing Director India Sunil Dutt said.

Buoyed by the huge response, the company has now decided to extend the offer by a week, he said.

The company sold more than 12,000 devices in just four days since the offer was announced on December 28 and distributors -- Redington and Ingram -- are waiting for new stock to come in.

"This limited festive offer has propelled a huge surge in PlayBook purchases in the last few days. We have sold over 12,000 PlayBooks across the country within these four days of the offer period, which ended on December 31, 2011," the distributors said.

Fresh stock is coming in to cater to the demand of customers for the extended offer period of one more week, they added.

Canadian firm Research In Motion (RIM) has slashed the price of its PlayBook by more than half to Rs 13,490 for the 16-GB version to cash in on the festive season and rising demand for tablet PCs in India.

A tablet PC, though smaller in size, has PC-like functionalities.

"BlackBerry continues to be an aspirational brand and we have seen a huge uptake in the market across the country for PlayBook during this offer period," Dutt said.

RIM, known for its BlackBerry series of phones, had introduced PlayBook in June in the Indian market.

The 16-GB version of the PlayBook is available at a more than 50 per cent discount from the regular price of Rs 27,990. Prices for 32 GB and 64 GB versions were also cut. The 32-GB version was available at Rs 15,990, while the 64-GB model was priced at Rs 24,490 under the offer.
