Windows Phone ‘tango’ Will Support 120 Languages

An interesting revelation pops up from India during Windows Phone developers event when Microsoft representative announced that the forthcoming iteration of Windows Phone dubbed as “Tango” will support 120 languages. The rep on stage stated that “Mango has support for 35 languages and Tango will have for 120 languages”.

If reports are to believe Microsoft is thinking to slip Windows Phone Tango to developing countries which were ignored by the company in the past.

The point to be noted here is that iOS platform supports 34 languages and Android 55 languages. While Microsoft’s OS windows Phone 7 Supports 125 languages, which clearly indicates the efforts of company to keep it floating in deep sea of competetion.

Microsoft speakers, as said by Ragubathy (who was a part of this camp) confirmed that developers will be enable to build apps for the “next release” of Windows Phone using C++ native coding, but he declined to name it. So readers keep on guessing whether the “next release” refers to Tango, Apollo, or the next developer release of Visual Studio.

Windows Phone Tango - The Next Mango - misses many features

The new Windows Phone Tango operating system, which was unveiled by Microsoft during the Mobile World Congress few days back, will miss out on several features that have been the highlight of the Windows Phone Mango.

This was revealed by a website, Liveside.net, which claimed to have got the details published by Microsoft on the Windows Phone help website.

However, even though features have been replaced there has been no lack of functionality and the users are less likely to face any problems due to it. The Windows Phone Tango devices will face a few limitations though.

For example, Tango based mobile phones and tablets could not use certain applications as the device will have a limited amount of RAM to spare for the apps. Fast app switching that has been one of the much talked features of Windows Phone will also be missing as Tango's 256 MB RAM will not support background applications.

The Tango based devices will also not be able to automatically upload images on to Skydrive (Microsoft's could storage). Besides, there will be less support for video codec's and HD Video playback as well.

Background tasks that allow applications to work freely in a low power state in the background have also been disabled to keep the memory free, so applications will require higher load times as compared to WP Mango.

On the brighter side, the Tango update will bring along better messaging capabilities for the devices to keep its users happy and location aware icon has also been added to the interface to let the users know when any application is accessing users location so that they can be alerted makes for some new features that have been added to the device.

T-Mobile to sell Nokia Lumia 710 (Windows Mango smartphone) for just $49.99

T-Mobile USA and Nokia said today they will sell the Lumia 710, marking Nokia's push to re-enter the U.S. market in a real way.

With the Lumia 710, priced at $49.99 and available on January 11, Nokia and T-Mobile are going after consumers who own a basic cell phone, but have been hesitant to upgrade to a more complicated smartphone. The companies believe the low price of the handset, lower-priced data, and easier-to-use Windows Phone operating system will help people ease their way into a more sophisticated mobile device.

It will mark the first Nokia Windows Phone to hit U.S. shores. For T-Mobile, the more affordable device should help it sway smartphone newbies and more budget-conscious subscribers at a time when its highest-tier customers leave for carriers offering a better selection of phones.

"This is the right product to go after the 150 million feature phone users in the country," said Chris Weber, head of Nokia's North America business, adding that figure is twice the size of the current smartphone base.

Announcing the launch of Windows Phone in India, Mr. Bhaskar Pramanik, Chairman, Microsoft India said, "We are incredibly excited about today's unveiling of Windows Phone. With Windows Phone, we have looked at the consumer experience  in an absolutely fresh way, and the end result is an operating system that is  stylish,  innovative,  and  one that seamlessly integrates the  most sought after user experiences such as search, gaming, email and social networks across Bing, Office, Xbox LIVE, Facebook, Twitter and more."

In his presentation, Bhaskar Pramanik also mentioned that Microsoft is working with content publishers and businesses in India for apps for India-specific content and services. He showcased Times of India and Snapdeal.com apps which would soon be available in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

The Windows Phone launch included executives from hardware partners for Windows Phone - Nokia, HTC, Samsung, Acer, and Qualcomm. Microsoft announced a range of Windows Phone devices that will be available in India soon. While HTC Radar would be available in the markets starting next week for INR 23,990, Samsung Omnia W and Acer Allegro would be available in November. Samsung had earlier this month announced the price for Omnia W as INR 19,990. Subsequently, Nokia would also launch Windows Phone devices in India, and other countries.

Speaking about analyst predictions of Windows Phone being the No.2 smartphone platform by 2015, Vikas Arora, Group Director - Operator Channel, Microsoft, said that he'll be disappointed with No.2 position. He obviously would be taking cognisance of the fact that even though it's a crowded market, it is a steeply growing market. While Microsoft is confident of the product and the reviews are great, it would be a tough challenge to penetrate iPhone's hype, BlackBerry's enterprise hold, and a market flooded with Android devices at every price point.
