Vandana Suryawanshi, a middle school teacher from Maharashtra who teaches earth science has been selected as the first international teacher for a prestigious space programme in the United States. She will be part of the 20 member team selected by the Space Foundation which will involve in the active promotion of its space and science education.

Vandana Suryawanshi has more than 20 years of teaching experience and has in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subjects. She is presently an educator with the Vidya Valley School in Maharashtra. She is not only an expert in earth science but also has rich experience teaching biology and general science.

It is to be noted that in the 10 year long history of the Space Foundation, not even a single teacher from a country other than the United States has been selected for this role. This is the first time that an International teacher has been selected for this prestigious fellowship of the Space Foundation.

“The new flight of Teacher Liaisons will serve as advocates for space-themed education across the curriculum and will use Space Foundation-provided training and resources to further integrate space principles into the classroom”, a media release said.

“The highly regarded Space Foundation Teacher Liaison programme has more than 270 active participants, including the 2012 flight. The teachers are selected by a panel comprising representatives from the space industry and military”, it said.

The 2012 Teacher Liaisons will be publicly recognised at the Space Foundation’s 28th National Space Symposium, scheduled for April 16 to 19 in Colorado. In addition to the recognition activities, the 2012 Teacher Liaisons will participate in workshops and education programmes at the 28th National Space Symposium.

Megaupload users might be taken down on Thursday

Megaupload, one of the leading file sharing site might lose all data by this Thursday as it was shut down by the United States FBI. Several Newspapers reported that, users stored data in Megaupload could be deleted on Thursday, even though deleting the data would make the defence much harder. The lawyer of the founders of Megaupload said that if the servers are wiped, defending his clients would become much more difficult. The US FBI has seven members in custody who are employees of Megaupload, including founder, Kim Dotcom. The website provided a file sharing service and was shut down for reasons of facilitating illegal sharing and downloading of music, movies and other content.

Megaupload uses outside companies to store data for a fee, and because their assets have been frozen, the storing companies will not receive their pay. One of the servers that Megaupload uses was based in Virginia in the United States, which is how the FBI were able to nab the website in the first place. Megaupload said that users stored family photos and other personal data on the service and if all the company's data were to be deleted, users would lose their personal files. Megaupload attorney, Ira Rothken said that at least 50 million Megaupload users were in danger of losing their personal material, as well, since defence would be made difficult, if the data was erased, the company was working very hard with prosecutors to not have the data erased.

Meanwhile, Megaupload founder, Kim Dotcom who was the World's Top ranked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Player. Since he is in prison, he lost his top spot and slipped to second position. As his bail was denied, it is expected that he might slip further more positions down. He plays the game with the name MEGARACER which he revealed on New Year's Eve.

Google joins Facebook and Microsoft to fight Phishing

Microsoft+Google+Facebook fights Phishing

On Monday, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo!, and eleven others outfits announced they had formed a new alliance to combat phishing — a way of fooling email and web users into providing sensitive information, including credit card numbers. The alliance is known as Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance, DMARC for short, and the aim of this sprawling alliance is to lay down new email standards that help stop the nefarious practice.

“One of the worst experiences for a user is being phished,” Adam Dawes, a Google product manager and DMARC representative, tells Wired. “The best way to protect them is to make sure the email never reaches the spam folder at all.”

Phishing is a relatively simple trick. Often, the spammer spoofs the data in the email message so it really looks like it came from a legitimate sender. There’s usually a way to figure out where the message really came from, but it can be hard for the average Joe to spot.

Today, as Dawes points out, phishing messages are often caught by an email client’s spam filters. But even as they check out their spam folders, many users can’t help but open on a message than says its from PayPal. Before they know it, someone has phished their credit card number. With DMARC, the idea is to get the email companies working behind the scenes to prevent phishing emails from ever hitting your inbox or spam folder.
About eighteen months ago, PayPal began working directly with Google and Yahoo to set standards for Gmail and Yahoo! Mail that would prevent fake PayPal messages from hitting a user’s inbox. According to Brett McDowell, one of PayPal’s security managers and now chairman of DMARC, the three companies were blocking over 200,000 fake PayPal messages each day.
Eventually, PayPal, Google, and Yahoo! started asking other outfits to get involved. Behind the scenes, new names began using what would become the DMARC protocols, and as more and more companies used the protocols, engineers noticed new flaws — and fixed them. Mike Adkins, a Facebook messaging engineer, says that Monday’s news isn’t a “Coming soon” announcement. “You’ve been protected by DMARC for a while,” he says.
The DMARC protocols are based on existing technologies, including the Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM). Both are common mail security protocols. SPF verifies the IP address of the email’s sender, while DKIM vets the structure of the email’s content, comparing it to encoded information coming from the sender.
DMARC is hardly the only cross-industry effort to battle phishing. A global non-profit called The Anti-Phishing Working Group encourages businesses to share the latest information about phishing tactics and techniques. Paul Ferguson, a senior threat researcher at anti-virus developer Trend Micro, tells Wired he supports any collaboration that fight malicious software and phishing — up to a point. “The only caution that I would have is that there are too many of these kinds of these of efforts, they start working against each other,” he says. Even inside a single company, he continues, you might have the marketing department backing one anti-phishing group, while the research department backs another.
PayPal’s McDowell reiterates that the goal of DMARC — at least for the moment — is to defend legitimate domains, not to address what’s sometimes called “typo-phishing,” where scammers use something that looks like a common domain but is actually a slightly different spelling.
“Domain-based phishing cannot happen when both parties deploy DMARC,” he says.

Other companies involved in the group include American Greetings Corp, LinkedIn Corp and Yahoo as well as privately held Agari, Cloudmark, eCert, Return Path and the Trusted Domain Project.

IDC security analyst Michael Versace said that the approach recommended by the group appeared to be effective and inexpensive to implement.

Yet he said that the industry should keep developing new technologies to fight spammers because he expects that cyber criminals will eventually figure out how to circumvent the DMARC protections.

Nine Indian students reach YouTube's Space Lab competition finals

Indians

Nine Indian students have made it to YouTube's SpaceLab, a global science competition that challenged 14-18 year-olds to design a science experiment that can be performed in space.

Hyderabad-based Nitya Raju, a finalist who participated in the 14-16 year-old category, said,

"My video shows a simple experiment to determine how liquids of different viscousities behave variously under microgravity. While most have seen the shapes water can assume when floating in a space shuttle, I'm curious about how the viscosity of a liquid affects its form."

Hosted by YouTube, Lenovo, and Space Adventures in cooperation with space agencies, including NASA, European Space Agency, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, YouTube Space Lab received thousands of videos from 80 countries.
Students not only described their science experiment ideas via video, but also demonstrated and animated the procedures. The YouTube community will be invited to judge the entries, alongside judges including scientist Stephen Hawking and former astronaut Leland Melvin.

The two winners will have the experiments conducted 250 miles above earth, aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and streamed live on YouTube from a ThinkPad laptop as part of a global event celebrating science and space.

Winners will get to choose a unique space experience: A trip to Japan to watch their experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS or, once they are 18, astronaut training in Star City, Russia, the training centre for cosmonauts. The winners will be decided on the basis of the judgement of the YouTube community alongside a prestigious panel of judges, including renowned scientist, Professor Stephen Hawking, NASAs Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier, NASAs Associate Administrator of Education and former Astronaut Leland Melvin, ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne, JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and Cirque du Soleils founder Guy Lalibert.

Six regional winners (two teams from each of the three regions- The Americas, Europe, Middle-East and Africa and Asia-Pacific) will be announced in February and will gather in Washington, DC, in March to experience a ZERO-G flight and receive a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop. From them, two global winners, one from each age group, will be announced and later have their experiments performed 250 miles above Earth aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and live streamed on YouTube from a ThinkPad laptop as part of a global event celebrating science and space. Additionally, the global winners will get to choose a unique space experience as a prize: a trip to Japan to watch their experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS, or once they are 18 years old, a one-of-a-kind astronaut training experience in Star City, Russia, the training center for Russian cosmonauts.

How to Score Good/High Marks in +2 (HSC Public Exam) 10th (SSLC Public )Tamil Nadu [How-To]

Greetings:

First, All the best for the students who are going to face +2 Public Exam in the coming months. Life in +2 is said to one of the toughest phase for a student from Tamil Nadu who eagerly wait for a quality degree courses. Sometimes +2 becomes the life changer for many guys.

+2 Public Exam:

But for me +2 Public Exam is just another exam and students never need to worry regarding the weight and value that it contains. The only thing students need to do is just to confront the exam as if they don't have any other exam in future to write whatever they read in the whole 1 or 2 years. So +2 Public Exam is the ultimate one for the school students and it marks the end of the Schooling of each student in Tamil Nadu. Thus +2 becomes the finishing point of one's schooling.

Why +2 Public exam is given much importance:

Some years back Tamil Nadu higher secondary students had to face a competitive Entrance Exam to attend the Tamil nadu Engineering & Medical Counseling and the students was awarded ranks according to the score that they had got in the Entrance Exam. So the pressure was on Entrance Exam rather than Public Exam. But now it's not the case, Entrance Exam gone and Public exam is the only factor that decides the rank of the student for the Tamil nadu Engineering & Medical Counseling.

Do's and Don't's Study Tips (for all):

* First concentrate only on the core subjects Physics,Chemistry,Mathematics for Engineering Students and Physics,Chemistry,Biology for Medical Students.

* Get Blue Print for all these subjects and make yourself familiar with it.

* Make small notes/points of each topic you read in a Notebook ( Keep it safe )

            - This will help you to revise during the last 1 hour of the exam .
            - This will help a lot for One-mark Questions.

* Avoid group studies as no one will concentrate well in a part.

* Read completely even if you read one chapter
             - Blue Print will help you to select which chapters you need to read first.

* Never  mug up things that are in your book like taking a photo with a camera.

Do's and Don't's Study Tips (for Centum Aimers):

* Prepare a bunch of One-mark questions in each chapter - consolidate it and make it in a separate Notebook.

* Understand the concepts rather than memorizing it - This will help in one-mark questions.

* Solve all the problems in the book - be fast enough to do it.

* Never leave even a single paragraph thinking that you can leave it in choice - This will hit you in One-mark.

* Review all your old answer sheets of unit test that you wrote in your exams and identify your weak area.

* Clearly read all the labeling parts of a Diagram or Figure.

Special Maths Study Tips:

* Complete all the one-mark questions given at the last of the book.

* Understand all the derivation of Formulae in each chapter.

* Read the first 2 - 3 pages description given in the start of each chapter.

* Theorems and Derivations are more important to complete all the one-marks correctly.

Writing Tips ( for all ) :

* Always write in the same way as question paper's structure.

* Always begin with One mark
      - because if you leave one mark for last and you didn't get time then you lose many easy marks.

* Leave the one marks blank that you don't know and you can finally write something in those things.

* Always start a new section in a fresh page, so plan according while writing.

* Inside a section ( like 5 marks or 10 marks ) you can interchange the question answers order.

* Always clearly mention the question number
       - never forget to mention a question number - it's very important.

* Always complete the diagrams in each question with labels and never make it at last time.

* Select the Problem questions to write first as you can save more time.

* Set a particular time for each question and never exceed it. If you feel you are exceeding it , leave that and start a new question - you can come back there at last.

* Leave a good space after each word and each line and make your paper looking good.

* Never strike a whole or half a page - that will put you in trouble by asking Invigilator to sign your paper.

Psychological Tips:

* Study early in the morning.

* Never sleep late in the night especially during Exam Days.

* Eat well before going to exam -  Try to have some chocolate after food.

* Drink water well during study holidays. This will prevent your body from getting more heat.

* Watch TV sometime for relaxation but never watch Movies or Cricket Matches.

* Never ask any of your friends how much they've studied.

* Avoid oily food before going to exam.

Ultimatum:

Hard work never Fails - Read Hard - Write Hard -
Success will chase you.

Facebook may file IPO next week reports Wall Street Journal

Facebook
Facebook may file papers for an initial public offering next week that would value the social network at up to $100 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The newspaper, citing people familiar with the matter, said Facebook could file IPO papers with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as early as Wednesday but the "timing is still being discussed."

It said the Menlo Park, California-based social networking giant is looking at a valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion and is close to picking Morgan Stanley as the lead underwriter for the stock offering.

The Journal quoted its sources as saying that Facebook's IPO could raise as much as $10 billion, making it one of the largest ever.

With a deal size of $10 billion, Facebook would slip into sixth place on the list of largest US IPOs between AT&T Wireless Group ($10.62 billion) and Kraft Foods ($8.68 billion), according to Renaissance Capital.

A market capitalization of $100 billion would put Facebook on a par with McDonald's ($101 billion), well ahead of Boeing ($56 billion) but behind Apple ($415 billion) and another Internet giant, Google ($186 billion).

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has deflected IPO talk for years, saying he is focused on building the company and not on going public.

But Zuckerberg, who co-founded Facebook in his Harvard University dorm room nine years ago and has seen it grow to more than 800 million members, recently seemed to bow to the inevitability of selling stock to the public.

In an interview with Charlie Rose of PBS television, Zuckerberg said an IPO was "not something I spend a lot of time on a day-to-day basis thinking about."

But, he added, "a big part of being a technology company is getting the best engineers and designers and talented people around the world.

"And one of the ways that you can do that is you compensate people with equity or options," Zuckerberg said. "At some point we're going to make that equity worth something publicly and liquidly."

Facebook's current annual revenue, mostly from online advertising, is estimated to be around $5 billion.

Scosche’s cellCONTROL, a device that stops you from using cellphone while driving

With the Scosche cellControl safe driving system, misfortunes caused by texting whilst driving are most likely to be averted. The combination of the trigger unit with the mobile app is said to disable certain features on smartphones like text messages, phone calls, emails and various other distracting applications, when on the road.

How it works: to create a safe driving environment, the company states that the system will be automatically activated as soon as the vehicle is set into motion. When coupled with the cellControl application, the trigger unit is capable of blocking any other app that is most likely to distract the driver. Also, the device communicates with smartphones through Bluetooth.

Scosche cellControl 1

“According to the National Highway Transportation and Safety Authority 18% of fatalities in distraction-related crashes involved a cell phone,” commented Kas Alves, Executive Vice President of Scosche Industries. “Those are the type of accidents that can easily be prevented and served as the inspiration behind cellControl.”

By restricting the use of SMS, internet, camera and other apps, cellular functions will also be blocked. However, voice calls can be commenced and received if the handset is connected to a handsfree accessory. Being simple and intuitive to setup, the company claims its system to be tamper free. At present, the service is compatible with platforms including Android 2.1 and above, BlackBerry 4.5 or later, Windows Mobile 5 as well as 6 and Symbian S60v3 devices.

The cellControl price tag sum up to $129.95 and it is available for purchase through the company’s website. To initiate the service, users will have to activate the safe driving system online and further download the corresponding app onto their handsets.

IBM Docs Takes On Google, Microsoft

At the recently concluded Lotusphere 2012 in Florida, IBM executives gave InformationWeek India an exclusive preview of IBM Docs -- a new product in the IBM SmartCloud for Social Business portfolio. IBM Docs is a new office productivity suite that includes a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software that all work in the cloud. As of now, there is no client or desktop edition of IBM Docs; IBM however continues to offer a client/desktop office productivity suite called LotusLive Symphony. IBM Docs is now in beta and you can experience it or contribute through a community initiative called Lotus Greenhouse (https://greenhouse.lotus.com).

IBM Docs allows organizations, both inside and outside the firewall, to simultaneously collaborate on word processing, spreadsheet and presentation documents in the cloud to improve productivity. Authors will be able to store and share documents in IBM SmartCloud, co-edit documents in real time or assign users sections of the document so they can work privately easing the management of multiple revisions from multiple authors in team-based documents. But haven't we seen that in some product before? What's the differentiator?

During an exclusive preview of IBM Docs, Jeanette Barlow, Product Manager, IBM said, "We are socially enabling the document process. We did not want to build just an editor. We wanted to create a solution that tackled the problems that arise when teams work together and collaborate on documents."

We observed co-editing in real-time, the ability to assign sections in a document to different people and a more meaningful way to track versions and audit changes attributed to different users. IBM has a strong foothold in the enterprise space and Google Docs (which has been favoured by many organizations) may have some real competition soon! But we'll have to watch out for IBM's pricing details, and Google may have an advantage here. Google also has an established enterprise base for its Google Docs offering in India with organizations like India Infoline and Zensar Technologies using it extensively.

The desktop client has a Lotus Symphony codebase which is based on Apache OpenOffice. Barlow informed that IBM will eventually merge the Symphony code back into OpenOffice core. "But we are also building from the ground up, a browser-based Web solution," said Barlow.

By the end of this year IBM will have both a rich client and also a cloud based solution for office productivity. The latter will be a Web-based solution based on HTML 5, and will not require browser plug-ins. So it would definitely be a draw for enterprises that just need basic editing and do not want to incur huge costs on client licenses. Collaboration and social features would be the big draw! That's in line with IBM's theme at Lotusphere 2012 -- "Business. Made Social."

IBM Docs Beta can be lively experienced here:

Nokia posts $1.38 bn loss in fourth quarter

Nokia posted a fourth-quarter net loss of (euro) 1.07 billion ($1.38 billion) as sales slumped 21 per cent even as the company's first Windows smartphones hit markets in Europe and Asia.

The loss compares with a profit of (euro) 745 million in the same period a year earlier.

Nokia said net revenue fell to (euro) 10 billion, from (euro) 12.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010, with smartphone sales plunging 23 per cent.

Nokia has lost its once dominant position in the global smartphone market, with Android phones and iPhones overtaking it in the growing smartphone segment.

The Finnish company is attempting a comeback with phones using Microsoft's Windows software, and said it has sold "well over'' 1 million such devices since they hit the stores in November in Europe and Asia, and the US in January.

YouTube uploads hit One Hour Per Second - 4 Billions views per day

Google's YouTube now receives 60 hours of uploads per minute and 4 billion views per day, the company has claimed.

Writing in a blog post, YouTube’s managers claimed that the amount of video uploaded to the Google-owned site had grown ten-fold since 2007.

“Since the dawn of YouTube, we’ve been sharing the hours of video you upload every minute. In 2007 we started at six hours, then in 2010 we were at 24 hours, then 35, then 48, and now...60 hours of video every minute, an increase of more than 30 percent in the last eight months. In other words, you’re uploading one hour of video to YouTube every second.”
A new website, onehourpersecond.com, has been built in an attempt to visualise the volume of content uploaded over set periods of time.
The site also claimed users were “watching more as well; we’ve now exceeded four billion video views globally every day. That’s up 25 per cent in the last eight months and the equivalent of more than half the world’s population watching a video every day.” YouTube claimed the numbers were continuing to grow.
YouTube redesigned its home page late last year to emphasise its full-length movies and social network credentials. The video-sharing site, which has 800 million viewers a month is now intent on making YouTube a more central part of its audience’s lives, Robert Kynci, YouTube’s vice president of content partnerships, said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas..

Google Plus user base crosses 90 million mark

Google's online social networking service 'Google Plus' has crossed 90 million users mark since its launch in June.

Google Plus now has attracted 90 million users, reflecting the huge interest in the social networking site which was opened to the public on September 20. That more than doubles the 40 million that Google reported in October.

Earlier, Google Plus service was available only through invitation as part of trial runs.

Interestingly, rival Facebook took about four years to reach 90 million users. Facebook, founded in 2004, has now 800 million users globally.

"I am super excited about the growth of ... Google Plus, which now has 90 million users globally - wellover double what I announced just three months ago. By building a meaningful relationship with our users through Google Plus we will create amazing experiences across our services," Google CEO Larry Page said while announcing the company's latest quarterly earnings.

Google unveiled 'Google Plus' in late June as part of efforts to garner a share of the lucrative social networking space that has so far been dominated by Mark Zuckerberg--led Facebook.

Since launch, Google has added toolbars and other buttons on its websites to aggressively promote the service.

During the quarter, Google has reported a net income to $ 2.71 billion in for October-December, which analysts termed as below market expectation.

It registered revenue of $ 10.58 billion for the quarter ended December 31, 2011, an increase of 25 per cent from the year-ago period.

Indian hackers published Symantec Source Code

A group of Indian hackers has offered support to an American man who filed a lawsuit against Symantec Corp by publishing source code from a 2006 version of Norton Utilities, a software program at the heart of the legal dispute.

A spokesman for the group, which is known as "Lords of Dharmaraja," released more than 13,000 files that were part of the product's source code late on Friday. "Pass it on to forensics and win the lawsuit," YamaTough said via Twitter.

The proposed class-action lawsuit claims that Symantec seeks to convince consumers to buy Norton Utilities and PC Tools software programs by scaring them with misleading information about the health of their computers. Symantec has said those claims are without merit.

It was not immediately clear how the source code might help the case. And one of the attorneys working with plaintiff James Gross said that he did not welcome assistance from the Indian hackers.

"This is not something we think is necessary to support our case and we don't support hacking," said Jay Edelson, an attorney with Edelson McGuire LLC. "We are not a rogue nation where the only hope is for people to take matters in their own hands."

Symantec spokesman Cris Paden said that his company no longer sells or supports Norton Utilities 2006. "The current version of Norton Utilities has been completely rebuilt and shares no common code with Norton Utilities 2006," he said. "

Symantec previously confirmed that the same group of hackers had accessed the source code to some of its anti-virus software.
