TCS overtakes RIL as India's most valued firm (Market-cap Leader)

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries today lost its position of the country's most valued company to the IT giant TCS, part of the salt-to-software conglomerate Tata group.

As the share price of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) fell by 2.81% to a multi-year low of Rs 692.90 today, the company's market valuation slipped to Rs 2,26,886 crore -- a shade below Tata Consultancy Services' Rs 2,27,282 crore.

Consequently, RIL lost its long-held position (except for a brief period in August this year) of the country's largest company in terms of market valuation. In comparison to RIL's performance, TCS shares today ended with a modest loss of 0.35% at Rs 1161.25 and were earlier seen trading with a modest gain for most part of the trading session -- incidentally the last for 2011.

The performance of TCS stock was also a shade better than the barometer index Sensex, which fell by 0.57%. Earlier this month, RIL had also lost its position of the most influential stock in the Indian market to another IT giant Infosys.

RIL had been briefly dethroned from its position of the country's most valued company twice in August -- first to Coal India Ltd and then to another state-run firm ONGC. RIL's market value slipped below that of TCS for the first time at around 2 pm this afternoon and the country's biggest software exporter managed to retain the lead at the end of the trading session.

RIL has been among the best stocks to own in India for many years, but it continued to under-perform the overall market for most part of 2011, which has as such turned out to be a bad year for the stocks.

Intel Launches Cedar Trail Atom Processors

Intel said that the new CPUs will be available in early 2012 in computers offered by Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Toshiba.

Intel claims that Cedar Trail netbooks will achieve up to 10 hours of battery life and consume up to 20 percent less power than its predecessor. The graphics chipset GMA 3600/3650 promises twice the performance of the previous generation platform. New features include WiDi and Wireless Music, which are now integrated in the product.

The N2600 arrives with core frequency of 1.6 to 1.86 GHz and a TDP of less than 3.5 watts. The N2800 features clock speeds of 1.86 to 2.13 GHz and a TDP of less than 6.5 watts. However, Intel did not announce two variants that are already listed in its technical documents, the 1.7 GHz N2650 and the 2.0 GHz N2850.

India ranks top in source of spam in 3rd quarter of 2011 with 14.8 percentage

More than 50 per cent of all spam messages in the world during the third quarter of 2011 originated from just six countries, with India accounting for the highest 14.8 percent of such messages.

According to Kaspersky Lab's spam report, India was ahead of countries like Indonesia (10.6 per cent), Brazil (9.65 per cent), Peru (6.65 per cent), South Korea (5.85 per cent) and Ukraine (3.7 per cent).

All of the countries that make up the top 10 sources of spam are situated in South America, Asia and Eastern Europe, the report said.

"This is due to the fact that there are numerous users in these countries and they are, for the most part, not very experienced when it comes to IT security. This makes them a soft target for cybercriminals spreading spam-bots," it said.

The report said that all GCC countries together accounted for only 1.33 per cent of all global spam, with Saudi Arabia leading the pack. This was attributed to the low number of users and more vigilance in protecting computers in these countries.

GCC countries are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates.

RIM slashes over 50% Price on Blackberry Playbook Tablets in India till December 31, 2011 - Playbook 2012 Newyear Offer

Canadian BlackBerry maker Research in Motion ( RIM), battling tough competition from Apple's iPad, is offering over 50 percent discount on its PlayBook tablets under a limited festive season offer till Dec 31.

A company spokesperson Wednesday said the 16 GB model of the PlayBook can be bought for Rs 13,490 in the Indian market instead of its regular price of Rs 27,990.

While the 32 GB model is available for Rs 15,990, the 64 GB model is being offered for Rs 24,490 against their regular prices of Rs 32,990 and Rs 37,990 respectively.

The smartphone maker has been struggling to gain significant market share since April when it launched the tablets. It has been able to sell 800,000 units of the device globally in the first nine months of financial year 2011-12.
So if you are planning to buy one, then go for it before December 31 because the prices will go back to their original form starting Jan 1, 2012.

As per the new offer, the 16 GB version of PlayBook will now cost around Rs 13,490, instead of the earlier price of Rs 27,990. While the 32 GB model is available for Rs 15,990, the 64 GB model is being offered for Rs 24,490 against their regular prices of Rs 32,990 and Rs 37,990 respectively.

The 16 GB version of the tablet was earlier being offered by some online retailers at Rs 26,000 with free BlackBerry Curve smart phone.

The Playbook tablet has a 7-inch LCD multi-touch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution. Powered by a 1 GHz dual-core processor, the device sports a 3 megapixel front-facing and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera.
