An eight member team from Google headquarters in the US will visit Kashmir Valley next week to interact with students, IT professionals and amateurs here.

"An international team of eight members of Google from the US will be coming on Monday and they will attend an interaction session with the students, entrepreneurs and IT professionals here," organising group Mercy Corps' Kashmir head, Usman Ahmad, told PTI.

He said around 800 people from the Valley will participate in the event - 'G|Kashmir' - which will be held on November 3 at SK International Convention Centre here.

"We had online bookings for the event and we closed it today," Usman said.

A first-of-its-kind event in Kashmir, 'G|Kashmir' will provide students, businesses, marketing executives, techies, developers, entrepreneurs, and Internet enthusiasts a chance to engage directly with the 'latest and greatest' from Google.

The event will provide training on using digital tools to spur technology innovation, business and entrepreneurship in Kashmir," Usman said.

It is well known that Google has already engaged in conflict-zones like Palestine to support and boost the IT sector, now the Mercy Corps has launched a publicity blitz in Srinagar.

Is Flipkart deleting Negative reviews on their site and masking it with fake Positive Reviews?

Flipkart is the India's fastest growing e-commerce website. Flipkart was started by two Amazon's ex-Employees and Notably both of them were IIT Alumini. Flipkart's fastest Service and Cheap Price tag made them famous by Mouth Spread without any great Advertisement and Publicity.

Flipkart is sometimes mentioned to be India's Amazon. But Flipkart differs from Amazon in a great Aspect i.e., Their Reviews.

The Product review in Amazon website is terrific and its reliable and it never seems to be made-up fake story.
But on the other hand, The review in Flipkart website is too bad to read and sometimes we might end up in thinking whether the Review is a true legitimate one written by their customers or any automated bot making up fake Reviews.

The issue is now more enlightened with the complaint over Flipkart that it deleted some negative reviews of its users.

From Woikr,
I recommended flipkart.com to a close friend of mine who was planning to purchase a LED TV. Flipkart.com recently launched their TV and video section and are offering heavy discounts. Based on my advice, he went ahead and bought a Samsung 46 Inches Full HD 3D LED for INR 1,07,420. Since flipkart.com is only delivering TVs in certain cities, he had the TV shipped to his relative’s place in Delhi and his dad would come and collect it from them. So far so good.
Here are the issues that he faced in the delivery process:
  1. The TV was not delivered on the promised date of delivery. His dad drove all the way from a different city to receive the TV only to find out that the it won’t be delivered that day and that flipkart “was going to” inform them at 6pm that day about it. For the record, the TV was delivered within the time mentioned on the product page, but flipkart.com failed to provide correct tracking.
  2. There was a free Shrek 3D Blu Ray scheme going on the TV (from Samsung). Flipkart.com did not deliver the Blu Ray discs with the TV. Instead, he got a call from flipkart.com asking him to specify his choice of Bu Ray discs to deliver. Here is a question – when the offer says “Free set of Shrek 3D Blu Ray titles”, why do you need the user to choose the titles? Just deliver the damn Shrek set!
  3. It has been a few weeks since he placed the order and despite complying with their request and specifying his choice of Blu Ray titles, he has not received the Blu Ray titles yet. What he has gone through though, is the harassment of talking to the flipkart.com’s customer service many times with no results whatsoever. In one of his conversations with them, the customer service person did tell him that he wasn’t supposed to specify his choice of Blu Ray titles. But still flipkart.com failed to deliver either the Shrek set or the ones he chose.
  4. He posted a review on the product page about his experience, which was later deleted by flipkart. They sent him this email:
Here are my thoughts on the whole episode:
  1. People do not go online just to get the stuff they are buying. They are paying the e-commerce site for the product plus the convenience of buying from their home coupled with a smooth delivery process. All of the above are products being sold at the e-commerce site. If retailers think that they are opening an e-shop just to offer another outlet for people to buy their stuff from, they are mistaken. And this is the reason why e-commerce is not picking up in India. And the same reason why amazon.com is hugely successful.
  2. In addition to lower prices, the online shops must offer an awesome customer service & effective delivery system. If I have to go through a series of harassing painful calls with the customer service who is not ready to listen to me, I will rather prefer to pay a few bucks extra to buy peace of mind along with the product that I am purchasing from a local retailer. In this case, flipkart.com won in the first, but failed in the second.
  3. From the whole episode, it looks like either flipkart.com ran out of Shrek 3D box sets, or Samsung had pulled the offer when my friend made the purchase. In either case, they should have called the customer and politely told him the truth offering replacement titles from their library or store credit. Nobody is going to return a 1 lakh rupees TV set because he got a refund instead of the free 3D Blu Ray box set.
  4. I read my friend’s review on the site for the brief amount of time it was there. He clearly mentioned that he loves the TV. He explained what he went through and at no point said anything bad about Samsung or the TV. Infact, he mentioned clearly in the first line that this review is for flipkart’s service. Flipkart.com has to understand that people reading the reviews are not idiots. They could have easily read through the review and decided whether they want to buy the TV or not. Also, when they deleted his review, they also lost any chances of getting a new customer who might have read the part about how awesome the TV is and would possibly have bought it.
  5. As mentioned in my first point, people buy both the product and the convenience from online retailers. And if someone has anything to say about either of them, product reviews section is the place to do so. But flipkart.com fails to understand this. If they feel that product reviews is not the correct section for this, they should build a separate section for flipkart.com’s service feedback. Something similar to a seller’s rating on ebay. And if they are really transparent & offer prompt and efficient customer service, they shouldn’t have any problem in doing so.
  6. Flipkart.com lost a free advertiser. My friend could have advertised flipkart.com to his friends and family had he received a proper customer service. Instead, he will now be telling this story to everyone over dinner. He purchased a TV worth more than a lakh online. How many people do you know would do that? He is from the very generation that is the target audience of e-commerce sites in the whole world, not just India. Losing him as a customer means loosing his friends as perspective customers.

Flipkart's publicity and popularity is in Stake after this incident. It is well known that Amazon is planning to start their e-commerce Business in India. These kind of issues may help the US Giant to have a big leap in India's Online e-commerce Business.

Samsung to launch flexible screen Mobile Phones in 2012

Samsung‘s new mobile device lineup will feature flexible screens starting in 2012, the company announced today.

In its quarterly earnings call, Samsung’s vice president of investor relations, Robert Yi, told investors, analysts and press, “The flexible display we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part. The application probably will start from the handset side.”

After flexible-screen mobile phones roll out, the company plans to introduce the same technology for tablets and other devices.

In January 2011, Samsung purchased Liquivista, a strategic acquisition that will allow it to produce the kinds of displays that were announced today. Liquivista made electrowetting display technology, which is used to create mobile and other consumer electronic displays that are bright, low-power, flexible and transparent.

Flexible screen technology was also a focus of Samsung’s in March, when Yongsuk Choi, director of Samsung Mobile Display, gave an overview of the company’s future mobile device plans. At that time, Choi said most of the flexible-display technology Samsung was working on was still in very early stages.

Nokia Kinetic – New Flexible Phone To Be Launched Soon

Nokia demonstrates yet another device- Nokia Kinetic, a new phone model that is flexible and could be bent and twisted easily. This model has been revealed this October in London at the Nokia World 2011 Nokia technology show.

It is a 5 – inch model resembling a tablet. It has a flexible AMOLED screen. It offers two applications- a photo viewer and a music player. The phone has two modes – the convex and the concave. To select some icon on the screen, the phone has to move in a convex position and to move back to the earlier page, the phone has to be brought back in the concave direction. The motion of the device in such a manner can lead to zoom in and zoom out of photos just by twisting the model in forward or backward direction respectively. The same kind of twist is required to start or stop a music application. The bending of the model form one side to the other side would offer the user to have a look through the music gallery and the picture albums. The phone is well-suited for the modern operating systems

Though this technology appears to be good, there are a lot of restrictions that will come in the way of its development. It cannot be operated with one hand. There is no record so as to how the handset will respond to unintentional changes that occur in the shape of the handset while it is being kept in pocket. But this phone is believed to provide a great experience while playing games on it.

The same concept of developing such a flexible model had earlier been put forth by Synaptics and Kyocera, but they failed miserably. This time its Nokia Kinetic to come all the way and to crack the code!!!

Samsung beats Apple in Smartphone Sale

For the first time, Samsung Electronics Co shipped more smartphones in the latest quarter than tech industry darling Apple Inc. On the surface, this may look like a big upset in a world that affords the iPhone maker adulation and outsized expectations. The real reason, however, has more to do with timing and Samsung's variety of offerings and prices.

Apple sold 17.1 million iPhones in the third quarter, 3 million fewer than expected. Samsung, meanwhile, shipped more than 27 million, according to analyst estimates.

So what happened?
For one, Apple's latest iPhone, the 4S, didn't come out until the quarter ended, so its sales are not included in the figure. People held back on buying older models in anticipation of the new iPhone, which came out Oct. 14. Apple said it sold more than 4 million units in its first weekend on sale, and that should be reflected in the tally for the current, holiday quarter.

"People were waiting," said Francis Sideco, analyst with the research firm IHS. "We don't see this as a signal that Apple is all of a sudden losing its edge. It's their normal thing. But while they are doing this normal thing, Samsung is (going strong) and they happen to have a really good quarter."

Samsung's quarter was helped by strong sales of its Galaxy phones, though Sideco said the numbers shouldn't lead to the conclusion that the Samsung Galaxy beat the Apple iPhone.

"What beat it is Samsung's lines," Sideco said.

Besides the Galaxy line, Samsung's phones include Conquer, Replenish, Focus and Indulge. IHS estimates that Samsung sold about 40 different models during the third quarter. By comparison, Apple had just two - the 4 and the 3GS.

Samsung, which is based in Seoul, South Korea, does not disclose the number of phones it ships. IHS, formerly known as iSuppli, estimates that Samsung shipped 27.3 million smartphones in the latest quarter. Jae Lee from Daiwa Securities puts the figure at about 28 million.

Analysts cautioned against reading too much into the numbers, but such comparisons are tempting given the pedestal that Apple is held on and the fact that the rivalry between the two companies has heated up and extended into the courtroom. Apple says the product design, user interface and packaging of Samsung's Galaxy devices "slavishly copy" the iPhone and Apple's iPad tablet computer. Samsung fought back with lawsuits of its own, accusing Apple of patent infringement of its wireless telecommunications technology.

Even as Samsung sold more phones, Apple seems to be making more money on each. That's one of the reasons Apple is now the most valuable tech company in the world, with a market value about three times that of Samsung.

Apple competes on - and dominates - the high-end smartphone market. By contrast, Samsung has both cheap and expensive phones available. That means Samsung can appeal to a broader range of customers, but the company has to settle for a lower profit margin on lower-end smartphones.

Sideco called both strategies good. Good, but different.

Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, limits the market it addresses because it is safeguarding its profit margin on the iPhone, said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. More expensive phones mean higher margins for the company, which so far hasn't focused on the market for lower-end phones.

"It's part of their plan," Milanesi said. "If they wanted to capture a wider segment of the market, they would go with a lower-end device."

That could come soon. The price cut earlier this month for the iPhone 4 to $99 (down from $199) and the decision to offer now-ancient 3GS for free - with a two-year service contract - could mean that Apple is testing the waters in the cheaper market.

"The sales of the $99 iPhone 4 will definitely help widen the addressable market," Milanesi said.

When it comes to the overall mobile phone market, though neither Apple nor Samsung are on top. That honor goes to Nokia Corp. The Finnish company is still the world's No. 1 cellphone maker even though it has fallen behind rivals in the smartphone market. Nokia shipped 16.8 million smartphones during the third quarter, a close third to Apple, according to IHS.

RIM Facility Center in India to spy on Blackberry Users

Research In Motion Ltd. has set up a facility in Mumbai to help the Indian government carry out lawful surveillance of its BlackBerry services, according to people familiar with the matter, but the move hasn't fully satisfied India's appetite for access to messages on the popular smartphones.

Last year, India threatened to shut down BlackBerry encrypted email and instant messaging services because it couldn't wiretap them. The government put the onus on Waterloo, Canada-based RIM to come up with solutions. Several government-set deadlines have passed and, though India still isn't happy with its surveillance capabilities, it is no longer threatening to shut down the service.

RIM partly assuaged India by setting up the small Mumbai facility earlier this year to handle surveillance requests from India. India can submit the name of a suspect its investigators want to wiretap, and RIM will return decoded messages for that individual, as long as it is satisfied the request has legal authorization, according to the people familiar with the matter.

The Mumbai facility handles lawful intercept requests for consumer services including the BlackBerry Messenger chat service, these people say. India saw the move as a positive step, but would prefer an arrangement where it has the ability to decode messages itself, so that it can conduct surveillance without disclosing the names of suspects to RIM.

India still has no method to intercept and decode BlackBerry enterprise email, which is used by corporate customers and features a higher level of encryption than consumer email and instant messaging. BlackBerry has repeatedly said it doesn't have the keys to unlock enterprise email messages—security is one of the service's key selling points.

Google Offers a copy of Groupon's Business - Copycat Google makes big changes to daily deals business

Google Inc unveiled big changes to its fledgling daily deals business on Thursday in the midst of rival Groupon Inc's IPO roadshow.

The largest Internet search company said its Google Offers business will distribute daily deals from at least 15 other daily deal sites, including Gilt City, kgbdeals, TIPPR, Plum District and Juice in the City.

Google Offers subscribers in the San Francisco Bay Area will get the new deals first, but the company plans to roll out the bigger inventory of deals to new cities in coming months.

Google tried to buy Groupon, the largest daily deal site, for about $6 billion in 2010, but was rebuffed. Groupon is now pitching an IPO to potential investors at a valuation of roughly $11 billion.

Earlier this year, Google launched its own daily deals business, sourcing offers with its own sales force.

Google will continue sourcing its own daily deals, but the changes announced on Thursday mean Google can offer a lot more deals without expanding its sales force a lot. However, the company will likely be sharing revenue from the new offers with the other daily deal sites.

Groupon's roadshow has faced some doubting investors, who wonder how the company will be able to compete with giants such as Google.

Chief Executive Andrew Mason has argued Groupon's big sales force, which numbered about 4,800 recently, helps the company negotiate the best deals with the most merchants.

New 'Socialbot' threat steals private info from Facebook - Do you know all your FB Friends?

Do you really know all your Facebook "friends"? Beware, if your answer is 'No', as researchers say you could be putting your private details at risk every time you say 'Yes' to an unknown friend request.

A team at the University of British Columbia in Canada found a worrying way to evade Facebook's security measures entirely and harvest information from the popular social networking site.

They created a team of "fake" Facebook users who were able to harvest tens of thousands of email addresses and private information from unsuspecting users, without human input, the Daily Mail reported.

Such basic information is often sufficient to launch an identity theft attack or launch a "phishing" attack to pilfer somebody's bank details, said lead researcher Yazan Boshmaf.

"An attacker could do many things with this data." According to the researchers, the fake Facebook users, known as Socialbots, were software agents that function almost like a social computer virus and can manipulate a Facebook account, pretending to be a human being.

The 'Socialbots' created by the team began sending friend requests to random users. Each was armed with a profile picture and name -- but were totally unknown to their new "friends".

The team found that one in five users accepted the friend requests, even without knowing them. The figure rose when the 'Bots' attempted to befriend the friends of the "friends" they already had on the network.

Because the 'Bots' seemed to be friends of friends, 60 per cent of people accepted the requests.

The team unleashed 102 Socialbots on the network. Within weeks, they had made 3,000 friends, they reported in New Scientist.

According to the researchers, many people's privacy settings 'shield' private data such as email addresses or their physical address from the public -- but leave the data open to friends.

The team of Socialbots were able to harvest 46,500 email addresses and 14,500 physical addresses from users' profiles.

The attack launched by Boshmaf's team was small scale -- and Facebook's defences could pick up on large numbers of socialbots.

But if the software were "cleverer" than the basic models used by Boshmaf, then Facebook's protection would be rendered useless, the researchers added.

Sony to buy out Ericsson's 50% Stake in the Joint Venture for $1.47 billion

LM Ericsson and Sony Corp. announced on Thursday they will go separate ways as Ericsson sells its 50 percent stake in mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson to Sony for (euro) 1.05 billion ($1.46 billion).

Sony Ericsson will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony and integrated into Sony's platform of network-connected consumer electronics products, the Japanese company and Swedish wireless equipment firm said.

The transaction gives Sony an opportunity to integrate smartphones with consumer electronics devices, such as tablets, televisions and personal computers, the companies said.

The move was widely anticipated by analysts, who have argued Sony Ericsson could become more competitive in the tough smartphone market under sole Sony ownership.

Shares in Ericsson rose by 5.1 percent to 70.1 kroner ($10.7) in early Stockholm trading, while Sony stock climbed 5.4 percent to 1.65 yen ($21.7) before closing in Tokyo.

``I believe this improves the outlook for Sony Ericsson, because Sony can take full responsibility for the company and use the unique things that they have,'' said Greger Johansson, an analyst with research firm Redeye. ``The opportunity to integrate the phones with their other products improves.''

Johansson said the smartphone market is ``extremely tough'' and Sony Ericsson's competitors are also developing quickly.

He said the price Ericsson received wasn't great, but it will be a relief for the Swedish company to be able to focus on its core wireless equipment business and offload the mobile phone maker that has taken up a lot of management time.

``Sony Ericsson has no strategic value for Ericsson anymore,'' added Helena Nordman-Knutson, an analyst with Ohman Fondkommission in Stockholm.

Ericsson and Sony combined their unprofitable handset ventures into the joint venture Sony Ericsson in 2001 and enjoyed some early successes with its Walkman and Cyber-shot phones.

In recent years it has suffered from the competitive climate in the smartphone market and earlier this month it posted a break-even third quarter result.

The company adopted Google's Android operating system for its smartphones in 2008, and has said it now controls about 11 percent of the Android-based smartphone market. Its Android-based Xperia smartphones account for more than 80 percent of its sales.

Thursday's deal will provide Sony with an intellectual property cross-licensing agreement, covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.

``We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment,'' Sony CEO, Sir Howard Stringer said, adding this includes Sony's PlayStation Network and its online provider of music, games and video, Sony Entertainment Network.

Stringer called the deal ``the last piece of the puzzle'' for Sony's portfolio of entertainment products, including movies, television and music and said it's no coincidence the deal was announced in the same month as the launch of the Sony Entertainment network.

He acknowledged the agreement was partly motivated by the tough competition in smart phone market.

"While we do have catching up to do, we have a lot of things to add to this phone,'' Stringer said. ``The television or whatever that we can make for this phone and other Sony devices is the beginning of something I think is quite magical.''

Nokia Lumia 800 - The First Real Windows Phone said Microsoft

Nokia Lumia Windows SmartPhone Launch :

NOKIA has launched its long-awaited first Windows 7 smartphones on October 26 2011 at Nokia World 2011 Event, hoping to claw back market share it has lost in the smartphone race to chief rivals, Apple, Samsung and Google.

But some analysts say it may be too little, too late, for the world's top mobile phone maker.

Nokia Lumia Windows SmartPhone Price Tag :

With price tags of $560 and $360, the Lumia 800 and 710 are based on Microsoft's operating system and come eight months after Nokia and the computing giant said they were hitching up.

Nokia Lumia Windows SmartPhone Vs Samsung Smartphones & iPhones :

"Lumia is reasonably good ... but it's not an iPhone killer or a Samsung killer," Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics said.

Nokia Lumia Windows SmartPhone Memory :

"But where Nokia does stand out is on their price - it looks like they are going to be very competitive."
Lumia 800, with Carl Zeiss optics and 16GB of internal memory, will be available in selected European countries in November, including France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Britain.

Nokia Lumia Windows SmartPhone Availability in Market :

It will be sold in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the year-end.

Nokia Lumia Windows SmartPhone Technical Specifications :

Lumia 710, with a 1.4 GHz processor, navigational applications and Nokia Music - a free, mobile music-streaming app - will first be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan toward the end of the year.

Nokia Share Prices :

The company's share price jumped almost 3 per cent in an otherwise depressed market on the Helsinki Stock Exchange but settled, closing almost unchanged at ($6.68).

Nokia Phone Statistics:

Nokia, which claims 1.3 billion daily users, has been the world's biggest handset maker since 1998, selling 432 million devices last year - more than its three closest rivals combined.

But after reaching its announced global goal of 40 per cent market share in 2008, it has struggled against rivals making cheaper handsets in Asia, and its share has shrunk to 24 percent earlier this year.

Worse still, Nokia's sales in the more lucrative smartphone market crashed 39 per cent in the third quarter as it continued to be squeezed in the low end by Asian manufacturers like ZTE and in the high end by the iPhone, Research in Motion's Blackberry, Korea's Samsung Electronics and Taiwan-based HTC Corp.

Nokia Lumia Windows SmartPhone Rivals in Market :

The iPhone has set the standard for smartphones among many design-conscious consumers and the Blackberry has been the favourite of the corporate set.

Google's Android software has emerged as the choice for phone makers that want to challenge the iPhone.

Samsung and HTC - snapping at Nokia's heels for third place in topend smartphones behind the iPhone and Samsung - are the biggest users of the Android platform.

Nokia is still operating Symbian software, older than Apple's software and considered clumsy by many, although it has been upgraded. Nokia also introduced the MeeGo platform in its flagship N9 model launched last month.

Mr Elop has said Windows software will become the main platform for Nokia smartphones but that it won't stop developing Symbian or MeeGo.

Mr Mawston says Nokia has been pushed into a corner as Symbian was unable to compete with other operating systems and MeeGo took too long to develop.

"It's a risk that they may be juggling too many balls at once," Mr Mawston said.

"They were pushed into a multi-platform strategy for at least the short-term, but given the competitive situation with Symbian and MeeGo they really had no choice but to develop a third (platform) and juggle all three at once."

Mr Elop described the Lumia phones as a "new dawn" for Nokia.

"Lumia is light ... Lumia is the first real Windows Phone," Mr Elop declared to the London audience.

He acknowledged that since he took over the Nokia leadership a year ago there had been "some difficult moments and some tough decisions to make," including more than 12,000 layoffs, but was upbeat about the future.

"Eight months ago, here in London we outlined a new direction for Nokia," Mr Elop said. "Since then we've gone through a significant transition and we are playing to win - no holding back, no hesitation, no second guessing."

Nokia, which according to Strategy Analytics, is the world's top seller of dual SIM card handsets, sold 18 million such devices in the third quarter.

"Dual SIM is really something Nokia should have been doing in 2007 and 2008 when the market really started rocketing quite aggressively," Mr Mawston said
"Like with smartphones really, they're two or three years behind and are gradually playing catch-up."

Nokia Lumia First Windows SmartPhone :

Asus Eee Pad Slider Features, Technical Specifications, Price

Eee Pad Slider Features :

The Eee Pad Slider is one of the growing mountain of Android tablets seeking (and generally failing) to challenge the iPad. But don't write it off immediately, because it has a secret weapon hidden under its gloss black display: a five-row keyboard.

One of the biggest complaints from potential tablet owners is the lack of easy data input. The answer to that complaint is generally two-fold -- firstly, tablets are designed as consumption, not creation, devices. Plus, if it's a real deal-breaker for you, then it's easy enough to pick up a small Bluetooth keyboard.

But Bluetooth is a hassle, and there are plenty of occasions when you might want to tap out a medium-length email reply without having to resort to a rubbish on-screen keyboard. So Asus has built a compromise device -- one that functions perfectly well as a pure tablet, but which conceals a keyboard for those occasions when you do want to write something more than a couple of lines.

Most compromises don't work out well for either side, but the Eee Pad Slider is a notable exception. Pulling at the top of the screen slides it up at a 40-degree angle, revealing the keyboard underneath. The sliding action is a little tricky at first, but there's a knack to it and before too long it's second nature.

The Slider's keyboard isn't too tricky to use, despite being rather smaller than a regular one. It's definitely possible to touch-type on, with only minor adjustments, and the key travel distance is about right. It has dedicated buttons for Android's Home, Back, Menu and Search functions, and you can also adjust the screen brightness and turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and off with keyboard shortcuts.

Clear screen

The screen above the keyboard is clear and bright, with excellent viewing angles and good colour reproduction. There's a big ol' bezel around the sides, possibly so that the keyboard could fit beneath, but the only real complaint here is that it's extremely glossy, so it's difficult to read in bright places and picks up fingerprints faster than a police forensics unit.

What's great is using the touchscreen and the keyboard in tandem. Browsing the web with your hands feels natural and intuitive -- far more so than using a mouse -- and then having the option to switch to the keyboard when you want to type something is very liberating. Like all the best technology, it gives you the best tools for the job and then gets out of the way.

Size and power

The trade-off, of course, is in its bulk. The Eee Pad Slider weighs 886g -- rather more than most of its competitors, and uncomfortable to hold in one hand for too long. It's also a little thick -- measuring 17.7mm front-to-back, which is more than twice that of the 8.8mm-thick iPad 2. Still, for many people that increased heft will be more than worth it for the benefits it brings.

Inside, a 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor yields excellent performance upto and including playback of 720p video. It struggles with 1080p, but unless you're using the included mini-HDMI port, that's not going to be a problem in terms of graphical fidelity. Swiping between screens is smooth and lag-free, 3D games play with no noticible stuttering, and the browser in particular performs excellently, even when multiple tabs are open.

Around the sides, there's a power button and a volume rocker, a slightly-odd reset button, an (external) microSD slot, the aforementioned mini-HDMI port, a headphone socket and a fully-functioning USB port. There's also a charger socket, which -- annoyingly -- is proprietary, and despite the other end being tipped with a USB port doesn't seem to charge over USB. With the great progress made in standardising chargers in the past few years, it's a real shame to see Asus return to a proprietary charger on the Eee Pad Slider.

That USB port is worth exploring in a little more detail, too. You can plug in a USB stick or a camera and use the bundled file brower to explore its contents. Alternatively, you can plug in a mouse to use instead of the touchscreen. This simple addition makes the Eee Pad Slider much more effective as a general computing device -- you could plausibly take it on holiday in place of a laptop and use it to sort, edit and upload your photos, rather than using it as just a media consumption device.

Multimedia support

In fact, using it as a media consumption device isn't especially pleasant. The default video player struggles with most formats (though others are available), and while most media companies have an Android app, only a tiny selection have an Android app that supports tablet screen sizes. The apps work fine, but the layout, in many cases, is far from ideal. Spotify is a good example -- a tablet optimised app might have your friends list, album art and your current playlist in different panes, but using it on the Eee Pad Slider just gives you a list of playlists, stretched out across the screen. The Kindle app is a nice exception, which works wonderfully, and the default music app is pretty effective too, if you're content to sideload MP3s onto the device manually.

So what's left to cover? The speakers, which are mounted behind the screen, are weedy when it's open and hopelessly muffled when it's not. Stick to headphones. The battery life is on the generous side of average, though short of what the iPad delivers. There's also a distinct lack of the crapware that often comes pre-installed on Android tablets. A little bit is present, sure, but not to the extent that we've seen on competion tablets. Asus should be appladed for that.

Finally, the design is... interesting. Obviously, personal taste will be a factor here, and we're not big fans of the metallic champagne-coloured trim, but one thing's for sure -- no-one is going to mistake it for an iPad in a hurry.

Conclusion

The Asus Eee Pad Slider is an intriguing alternative to a traditional tablet plus a Bluetooth keyboard. It's (just about) a lightweight alternative to a laptop, and certainly a solid competitor to anything in the rapidly-shrinking netbook market. In essence, it has its fingers in many pies. But the problem with that approach is that it doesn't sit firmly in any camp, so it's difficult to recommend for any particular purpose. If you like the Android platform, don't mind a slight paucity of apps designed for the large display, and plan to do a lot of typing, then it's a great choice.

Julian Assange says 'Financial blockade' may close WikiLeaks

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, said on Monday that his controversial website could be forced to shut down by the end of the year because a 10-month-old "financial blockade" had sharply reduced the donations on which it depends.

Calling the blockade a "dangerous, oppressive and undemocratic" attack led by the United States, Assange said at a news conference that it had deprived his organization of "tens of millions of dollars," and warned, "If WikiLeaks does not find a way to remove this blockade, we will not be able to continue by the turn of the new year."

Since the end of 2010, financial intermediaries - including Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and Western Union - have refused to allow donations to WikiLeaks to flow through their systems, he said, blocking "95 percent" of the website's revenue and leaving it to operate on its cash reserves for the past 10 months. An aide said that WikiLeaks was now receiving less than $10,000 a month in donations.

Assange said that WikiLeaks had been forced to halt work on the processing of tens of thousands of secret documents that it has received, and to turn its attention instead to lawsuits it has filed in the United States, Australia, Scandinavian countries and elsewhere, as well as to a formal petition to the European Commission to try to restore donors' ability to send it money through normal channels.

WikiLeaks receives and publishes confidential documents from whistle-blowers and leakers, who are eager to see the site continue with the "publishing" sensations that drew worldwide attention last year. WikiLeaks released and passed to news organizations huge quantities of secret U.S. military and diplomatic cables on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and other subjects.

Assange held the London news conference Monday while on a brief break from his effective house arrest on a country estate 100 miles outside the capital. Limits on his movements are part of the bail conditions imposed on him last year while British courts decide whether to extradite him to Sweden.

Google Plus user base crosses 40 million mark

Google's online social networking service 'Google Plus' (Google+) has crossed 40 million users mark since its launch in June.

Google Plus now has attracted 40 million users, reflecting the huge interest in the social networking site which was opened to the public on September 20. Earlier, the service was available only through invitation as part of trial runs.

Interestingly, rival Facebook Inc took three years to reach the 25 million users mark and crossed the over 50 million active users mark in October, 2007. Facebook, founded in 2004, has now more than 800 million users across the globe.

"Google Plus is now open to everyone and we just passed the 40 million user mark. People are flocking into Google Plus at an incredible rate and we are just getting started," Google Chief Executive Larry Page said while announcing the company's latest quarterly earnings.

Google unveiled 'Google Plus' in late June as part of efforts to garner a share of the lucrative social networking space that has so far been dominated by Mark Zuckerberg-led Facebook.

During the quarter, Google has reported a 26 per cent jump in its net income to USD 2.73 billion in July-September 2011, helped by robust advertising business.

It registered revenue of USD 9.72 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2011, an increase of 33 per cent over USD 7.28 billion in the same period last year.

Facebook tracks Logged out users

Facebook has denied allegations that it tracks users when they are logged out, saying it only uses tracking cookies to personalise content and to make the social networking site more secure.

An Australian technologist Nik Cubrilovic, recently claimed that when the user is logged out of Facebook, rather than deleting its tracking cookies, the site merely modifies them, maintaining account information and other unique tokens that can be used to identify its users.

"Even if you are logged out, Facebook still knows and can track every page you visit," Cubrilovic wrote in a blog post.

But Facebook engineer Gregg Stefancik denied that the company tracked users in a comment on Cubrilovic's post, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Stefancik did admit that Facebook alters, but does not delete cookies when users log out.

He said that Facebook does that as a safety measure, and does not use the cookies to track users or sell their personal information.

"Facebook does not track users across the web. Instead, we use cookies on social plug-ins to personalise content (e.g. show you what your friends liked), to help maintain and improve what we do (e.g. measure click-through rate), or for safety and security (e.g. keeping underage kids from trying to sign up with a different age)," Facebook said in a statement.

"No information we receive when you see a social plug-in is used to target ads, we delete or anonymise this information within 90 days, and we never sell your information," it added.

The social networking giant said that the logged-out cookies are used to identify spammers and phishers, detect when an unauthorised person is trying to access a user's account, help users regain access to an account when it's been hacked and disable registration for underage users who try to re-register with a different birth date.

Tim Cook has same vison as me: Steve Jobs

Tim Cook, after joining Apple Inc in 1998, quickly gained the trust of Steve Jobs, who had recently taken back control of the company, according to a biography of Jobs to be released on October 24.

Jobs initially oversaw supply chain after he returned to Apple in 1997 following a 12-year hiatus. By turning that responsibility over to Cook, Jobs was able to focus on product vision and broader strategy, instead of the nitty-gritty of manufacturing and purchasing the parts needed to build a growing array of products.

"I trusted him to know exactly what to do," Jobs told Walter Isaacson, author of "Steve Jobs," published by CBS Corp (CBS)'s Simon & Schuster. "He had the same vision I did, and we could interact at a high strategic level and I could just forget about a lot of things unless he came and pinged me."

The authorized biography, based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs, gives fresh insight into the executive's early interaction with Cook, who later succeeded him as CEO and is now running the world's most valuable technology company. The book, purchased by Bloomberg, also highlights the central role played by Jonathan Ive, senior vice president of industrial design. Other details include the advice Jobs gave Larry Page soon after he was named CEO of Google Inc, one of Apple's fiercest rivals.

Jobs considered Ive, who goes by Jony, his "spiritual partner" who was vital to product development, according to the book. Jobs said he set up Apple so that nobody could tell Ive what to do.

Collaborating With Ive

"He understands what we do at our core better than anyone," Jobs said of Ive. "If I had a spiritual partner at Apple, it's Jony."

Jobs said he and Ive typically dreamed up Apple products, often having lunch together and collaborating on designs in Ive's studio at Apple's Cupertino, California, campus.

Cook, the son of a shipyard worker, oversaw Apple during Jobs's three medical leaves as he battled a rare form of cancer that eventually claimed his life.

When Jobs came back from his first medical leave in 2004, he was "on a mission," Cook told Isaacson.

"Even though he was now running a large company he kept making bold moves that I don't think anybody else would have done," Cook said.

When Jobs hired Cook away from Compaq Computer, Jobs was pressing the company to build so-called just-in-time factories, where products are built as orders come in, limiting the amount of inventory sits on shelves, which can hurt financial results.

Cook's overhaul

"I knew what I wanted and I met Tim, and he wanted the same thing," Jobs said.

Cook sliced the number of key Apple suppliers to 24 from 100 and persuaded them to cut better financial deals or risk losing Apple's business, according to the book. He also closed 10 of the company's 19 warehouses to limit where inventory could build up. By September 1998, Cook had cut inventory down to six days, from about a month.

Cook, who majored in industrial engineering at Auburn University and earned a master's of business administration from Duke University, said he knew within five minutes of meeting with Jobs that he wanted to work for Apple.

"My intuition told me that joining Apple would be a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity to work for a creative genius," Cook said. "Engineers are taught to make a decision analytically, but there are times when relying on gut or intuition is most indispensable."

'Mow you down'

The book paints a picture of Cook as someone who thrived under Jobs because he was calm and decisive, while shunning the limelight.

"Some people resent the fact that Steve gets credit for everything, but I've never given a rat's ass about that," Cook said. "Frankly speaking, I'd prefer my name never be in the paper." Another key to Cook's success was learning when and how to disagree with Jobs.

"I realized very early on that if you didn't express your opinion, he would mow you down," Cook said. "He takes contrary positions to create more discussion, because it may lead to a better result. So if you don't feel comfortable disagreeing, then you'll never survive."

While handling day-to-day operations while Jobs was away for a liver transplant in 2009, Cook said during a conference call that Apple would thrive whoever is at the helm.

Advice for Google's Page

When he heard the remarks, Jobs didn't know whether to be "proud or hurt that it might be true," Isaacson wrote.

When Jobs returned from getting his transplant in Memphis that year, Ive and Cook met him at the airport.

While Jobs was a vigorous competitor, he also came to view himself as an elder statesman with a responsibility for giving advice to Google's Page, Facebook Inc CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other emerging technology executives, according to the book.

Soon after Google co-founder Page was named to replace Eric Schmidt, he sought advice from Jobs about being a better CEO.

"My first thought was, 'F**k you,'" Jobs told Isaacson. Jobs was incensed over Google's foray into smartphones. Jobs then reflected on how Hewlett-Packard Co co-founder William Hewlett had helped him earlier in his career.

Jobs urged Page to sharpen Google's focus and jettison products that put the company at risk of becoming like Microsoft Corp.

Giving back

"I described the blocking and tackling he would have to do to keep the company from getting flabby or being larded with B players," Jobs said of the meeting in his living room. "Figure out what Google wants to be when it grows up. It's now all over the map. What are the five products you want to focus on? Get rid of the rest, because they're dragging you down. They're turning you into Microsoft."

Jobs said he intended to advise other executives in the succeeding months.

"I will continue to do that with people like Mark Zuckerberg, too," Jobs said. "That's how I'm going to spend part of the time I have left. I can help the next generation remember the lineage of great companies here and how to continue the tradition. The Valley has been very supportive of me. I should do my best to repay."

Gaddafi image spammed out by Hackers to imitate AFP

A computer security firm warned that cybercriminals were attempting to exploit Agence France-Presse photos of slain Libyan dictator Muammer Gaddafi in an email scam.

The email contains malware designed to infect personal computers running the Windows operating system, said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at British-based computer security company Sophos.

"Hackers have spammed out an attack posing as pictures of (Gaddafi) death, tricking users into believing that they came from the AFP news agency and are being forwarded by a fellow Internet user," Cluley said in a blog post.

Cluley said the scam email purports to be from "AFP Photo News" and offers "bloody photos" of Gaddafi death.

AFP was the first international news agency to distribute a picture of Gaddafi's body following his death on Thursday, but has sent no such email.

Cybercriminals frequently use high-profile news events to entrap unsuspecting victims with malware designed to steal data or take control of their computers.

Groupon cuts IPO valuation by less than half

Groupon (www.groupon.com), the wonder story that has gradually gained a lot of doubters, is moving forward with a scaled-back initial public offering, and is showing some better progress toward profitability. The company said Friday in a revised S-1 filing that it will sell 30 million shares at $16 to $18 a share, which would raise up to $540 million and value the company at $10.1 to $11.4 billion.

The company will only offer a small five percent of its common stock to investors. For now, it looks like Groupon is intent on going public raising a lot less than its original goal of $750 million, and it’s at much smaller valuation than the $25 to $30 billion bandied about earlier this year. But the company is showing that it’s making progress with a business model that many have questioned.

According to its third quarter data, Groupon, which will list on the Nasdaq, has managed to boost revenue by 426 percent year-over-year to $430.1 million from $81.8 million, and revenue is up 9.6 percent from the second quarter, a more modest growth curve compared to previous quarters. The company also scaled back its net loss to $10.6 million from $49 million compared to the same quarter last year. The company’s marketing costs, which have been a cause for concern, was trimmed down to $181 million, compared to $432 million for the first six months of the year. But Groupon has managed to keep growing, increasing its subscribers to 143 million up from 21 million a year ago and 116 million in the second quarter. Groupon now has $244 million cash on hand, an 8 percent increase versus the second quarter, and up 255 percent over last year.

The company still faces a lot of questions about how it can move toward profitability. Andrew Mason, the company’s CEO, asserted in a controversial note to employees that got the attention of the SEC that it would be able to scale back its marketing costs over time. But the figure has still raised concerns with analysts who wonder if Groupon can keep subscribers while slashing marketing. The SEC has also taken issue with some of the metrics Groupon has used, which Groupon has since dropped.

Groupon critics will still find reason to worry about the business. BuyWithMe, another group-buying service, just laid off more than half its staff, and other competitors are dropping out, which may be good news for Groupon but also leads to questions about the viability of the market overall. But with the latest third-quarter numbers, Groupon has a better story to tell as it takes its road show to investors. Will it be enough to convince them that Groupon is legit? We’ll have to see when the company finally goes public.

Microsoft sued for monopoly abuse by Israeli firm

Microsoft Corp used its monopoly position in computer operating systems to block the PC-sharing business of MiniFrame Ltd, according to a lawsuit filed by the small Israeli technology company.

The world's largest software company, which supplies the operating systems on 90 per cent of the world's PCs, unfairly changed its licensing agreements and bullied MiniFrame's potential customers to prevent it from winning valuable contracts, the Israeli company said.

MiniFrame's SoftXpand software lets multiple users access the same PC operating system from multiple locations, using only a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The company said that does not violate Microsoft's original user agreements, which prohibit only multiple PCs accessing the same system.

The Israeli company claims pressure from Microsoft forced Hewlett Packard Co, JPMorgan Chase & Co and other large companies to drop plans to buy MiniFrame's products, costing it billions of dollars in sales.

In the lawsuit, filed in New York federal court late on Wednesday, MiniFrame is demanding more than $1 billion in damages.

Microsoft, which only this year concluded monitoring by the US government following a settlement of antitrust charges in 2001, did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

The case is MiniFrame Ltd v Microsoft Corporation, 11 CIV 7419, in the US District Court Southern District of New York.

iPhone 4S actual(original) manufacturing cost $188

Apple Inc's spends at least $188 in component costs to make each of its fifth-generation iPhone 4S, consultancy and research firm IHS iSuppli estimated on Thursday.

The cost to make the iPhone 4S, which starts at $199 for the 16GB version with a wireless plan contract, totals at least $196 when $8 in manufacturing cost is added, according to an analysis by IHS iSuppli, which broke open the phone.

Apple has never revealed how much it costs to make the iPhone, which accounts for about 40 per cent of its revenue.

The bill of materials, or cost of all components, for a 32 GB version is $207 and the high-end 64GB version is $245. IHS iSuppli estimated.

The estimates account only for hardware costs and do not include other expenses such as software, licensing, royalties or other expenditures, IHS iSuppli said.

The two other iPhone 4S models are similar to the 16 GB model, but with more NAND flash memory, the group said.

Vodafone to pay Rs 25k fine for pesky calls

In a significant judgment that could benefit millions of mobile phone subscribers troubled by pesky telemarketing calls and messages, a district consumer forum last week directed Vodafone Essar Limited to pay Rs 25,000 to a doctor who had subscribed to the DNC - Do Not Call Facility - but still kept getting calls from various companies. The forum held the service provider guilty of deficiency of service and ordered it to pay Dr Ashesh Gala Rs 20,000 as compensation and Rs 5,000 towards cost of the complaint.

Dr Gala, who filed a complaint in the Mumbai Suburban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in October 2009, owns and runs Netra Jyot Eye Care Centre, a hospital in Mulund (W). Gala had a cell phone for which Vodafone Essar Ltd were the service providers.

Gala's complaint stated that many companies from the service sector would call him on his cell phone time and again and even sent him messages. To stop the calls and SMSes, Gala informed Vodafone, his service provider, and subscribed to its Do Not Call (DNC) facility in December 2007.

However, despite subscribing to the service, Gala alleged he received repeated calls from a bank between July 2007 and February 2008. Aggrieved, Gala sent the bank a notice on March 3, 2008. The bank replied to the notice, apologizing to him and assuring Gala that he would not receive such calls or messages from it in future. However, since calls from various other companies continued, Gala filed a complaint with the forum citing deficiency in service and sought a compensation of Rs 50,000.

Vodafone, in its reply before the forum, denied the allegations leveled against it. It further submitted that the complaint could not be entertained by the forum until the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was made party to the complaint since DNC was a facility that was available on the national level. The service provider told the forum that under the DNC facility, there could be a drop in the number of telemarketing calls but they cannot be stopped completely.

However the forum observed that as TRAI was a regulatory body and not a service provider, it could not be made party to the complaint. The forum further observed that according to TRAI regulations, once the subscriber opts for the DNC facility it is the responsibility of the service provider to see that such calls and messages are not received from companies.
