A litmus-like sensor to detect chemical weapons

Scientists have developed a new litmus-like paper sensor that can trace the exposure of nerve gas within 30 seconds, a feat they say could help soldiers to be better prepared against chemical weapons.

Nerve gases, the most toxic of chemical warfare agents, are colourless, odourless, and tasteless. As they are called, these gases affect the transmission of nerve impulses through the nervous system.

But researchers at the University of Michigan said the new paper strips they developed are designed in such a way that it could change its colour from blue to pink within 30 second of exposure to trace amounts of nerve gas.

"To detect these agents now, we rely on huge, expensive machines that are hard to carry and hard to operate," Jinsang Kim, an associate professor of materials science & engineering at the university, said in a statement

"We wanted to develop an equipment-free, motion-free, highly sensitive technology that uses just our bare eyes."

The new sensors, which is detailed online in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, combine a group of atoms from a nerve gas antidote with a molecule that changes colour when it's under mechanical stress.

The antidote's functional group binds to the nerve gas, and the resulting stress triggers the colour-changing molecule to turn from blue to pink.

In their experiment, the researchers used a less toxic "nerve agent simulant" related to Sarin gas. Their sensors were able to detect its presence at a concentration of 160 parts per billion, which is five times less than the amount that would kill a monkey.

"We believe these paper strips would detect real and potent nerve gases faster and in even lower concentrations considering their high vapor pressure and more volatile properties," Kim said.

"It feels so gratifying when we, as scientists and engineers, can provide solutions to our society through research."

The university, which is trying to patent the invention, is now seeking commercialisation partners to help bring the technology to market.

The research is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Research Foundation of Korea.

Intel launches Intel TV to beat Apple into the smart-TV business

A few months ago Intel and Mountain View laid a huge egg when they, along with Sony and Logitech, tried to market Google's TV platform.

This is the probably first time a technology partnership went so awry that it actually ended up costing the Logitech CEO his job - and Sony's CEO announced his departure shortly after. This was because Google, as usual, didn’t deliver a complete solution and the end result was a really bad experience.

Intel appears to have learned from this debacle and now realizes if something needs to be done right, Santa Clara should do it themselves.

As you may recall, Microsoft came to much the same conclusion and the end result was Zune, which actually illustrates how such a strategy can backfire.

However, another successful example is Apple and the wildly popular iPhone, which showcases the positive potential associated with indigenous development. True, Apple and Intel are two completely different companies with disparate cultures, so assuming a parts company can easily do what a solutions company like Apple is somewhat of a stretch.

Then again, I do think Intel may have a good idea with its recent effort to create a TV service. But will it work?

For some time now, Intel has successfully demonstrated it is capable of executing new consumer initiatives with existing technology. For example, they can upscale real time from standard definition to high definition, changing older programs into vastly better experiences in real time. In addition, and we’ll come back to this, Intel streams in standard definition, while giving consumers a high definition experience - opening up more homes to streamed video without bringing networks to their knees.

In addition, Intel can take 2D programs and transform them into 3D content. Similar to HD, the technology starts with a much smaller file than streaming 3D (which is generally HD and 3D), while still providing an equivalent experience. Essentially, this means that folks with 3D TVs who are struggling for content can "transform" their 2D movies into a 3D experience using Intel technology.

Finally, Intel is capable of bringing a vastly more open ecosystem with an app store to TVs. For example, think of all your favorite mobile games upscaled to HD and played on your big screen. Now, depending on what platform Intel uses (I’m guessing Android), they would have access to an entire gaming portfolio, allowing them to pick titles that would be stunning in HD, 3D or both.

However, the secret sauce would be on the hosting side of the service. One of the major current issues with streaming is that providers can’t be sure what they are streaming to and have to cover a wide variety of technologies. Meaning, most of the time they are actually streaming programs in native form. Think massive programs if we are talking HD-3D - which is why they can’t often do it. Even HD, given network constraints, is frequently an iffy experience.

But if Intel knows what is on the client side of the process - because they built it - they can optimize and target the stream for the appropriate technology. As such, they should be able to create optimally compressed streams - assuring the user receives not only the best looking content, but a stream that takes up the least amount of bandwidth. This would help relieve the growing stress faced by networks, while providing 3D and HD programing to homes that simply don’t have the bandwidth today.

In addition, Intel could also do some interesting things in terms of shared programing with both client and host. Years ago, in collaboration with Microsoft (who eventually killed their part of the project), Santa Clara and Redmond created Chrome Effects - where the information for a render was generated by the host but rendered on the client side. This technology created the potential for extremely low bandwidth HD programs, which could theoretically be used for lower performance products like smartphones and tablets powered by Intel’s x86 processors.

One potential result? A platform capable of transforming Intel based post-PC products - such as tablets and smartphones - into market leaders.

The promise for something like this is no less than the total transformation of rich on-line media for Intel based TVs, set top boxes, PCs, tablets, and smartphones. However, the problem is twofold: Currently, Intel isn't in in 3 of the four above-mentioned categories, at least not in terms of any real numbers. So without the clients in place, it will be quite difficult for Santa Clara to showcase the benefits. Remember, Intel is a parts vendor and their service history is nothing less than horrid.

Of course, there is yet a third problem: Much like with Microsoft's Zune and Xbox, Intel's partners could view their TV initiative as a competitive move, prompting a pullback from Santa Clara - which would benefit both AMD and ARM vendors like Nvidia and Qualcomm.

IBM’s Holey Optochip transfers data 1 Trillion Bits per Second - The fastest transfer in the Planet

IBM Researchers have built an optical chip that can transfer more data per second than pretty much anything else on the planet.

They call this transceiver the Holey Optochip — holey because they’ve taken a chip wafer and fired 48 holes in it so that laser light can be blasted in and out of the chip, moving data at one trillion bits per second. That’s eight times faster than the fastest comparable optical components on the market today, and about 10,000 times faster than the 100 Mb/second Ethernet that’s still common on corporate networks.

It doesn’t use much power either — just under five watts. That’s a big issue in today’s data centers and supercomputer installations.

IBM doesn’t plan to turn the Holey Optochip into a product, but they would like it if someone in the transceiver business licensed their technology to build super-fast networking technology for high-performance computers.

The chip is built out of commodity components — the chip’s hole-riddled design is the breakthrough here, not any individual component — so this is something that could happen within the next few years, says Clint Schow a group manager at IBM Research. “This is basically just a higher bandwidth version of those links today that are used in high-performance computers,” he says. “The trick is we package it very well so we can deliver on the bandwidth and power simultaneously.”

Networking bottlenecks are becoming a real problem as computer-makers cram more and more powerful processors into massive supercomputing system. It’s becoming tricky to get all these chips talking to one-another in an efficient way, so they’re not spending too much of their time just waiting for an answer from some other part of the machine. As supercomputers become used for more and more types of programming, predicting how the network will be used becomes even harder.

Seeing these problems ahead, Schow and his team set off to find a way to get to this one trillion bits per second (a terabit) networking about five years ago. “The network’s becoming the real problem that’s limiting everything,” Schow says.

IBM researchers will discuss the Holey Optochip Thursday at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference in Los Angeles.

The New iPad is the most beautiful tablet in the market - The first iPad 3 - The New iPad review

Apple chief executive Tim Cook took the stage and announced the new iPad in San Francisco. Even though the device looks and acts like the previous version, there’s a lot that’s new under the surface.

For starters, the new iPad boasts a magical 9.7-inch “Retina Display” screen with 2048-by-1536 resolution.
That’s a million more pixels than an HDTV.

The tablet also offers a greatly improved camera on its back (a 5 megapixel shooter with technology similar to the one featured on the iPhone 4S), new 4G LTE options (for both Verizon and AT&T), and a considerably more powerful processor.

But does the new iPad successfully defend its reputation as the King of Tablets?

In terms of materials, general design and even packaging, it’s essentially the same product as the iPad 2. It’s a tiny bit thicker and a little heavier — but that’s about it.

The device comes in a handful of varieties here in the U.S. You can buy it with storage capacities of 16GB ($499), 32GB ($599) or 64GB ($699), or get it equipped with 4G LTE for an additional $129.

Apple’s now selling the new iPad’s predecessor, iPad 2, at the discounted price of $399.

By now you’ve heard about the revolutionary screen on the new iPad. But does it live up to the hype? In a word: yes.

This display is outrageous. It’s stunning. It’s incredible. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that you can hold these beautiful images in your hands, or maybe it’s the technology that Apple is utilizing, or maybe it’s the responsiveness of the operating system. But there’s something almost otherwordly about how good this screen is. For rendered text or high-resolution images, it just looks like a glowing piece of paper.

As far as performance goes, while there isn’t an obvious speed boost in comparison to the previous generation iPad, there’s certainly no stutter, stagger or delay when using the tablet. With many modern mobile devices, there’s this constant, nagging sensation that it’s going to jam up, freeze or otherwise not respond to your commands. That sensation is nowhere to be found on the new iPad — and it’s a relief.

On the data side of things, at least on Verizon’s LTE network, this thing screams. If you own a Verizon 4G phone, or know what they’re capable of, then you’ll get the gist of what the new iPad can do. I saw higher speeds in midtown Manhattan than what I get on my home network.

Another nice perk is that if you buy the Verizon version, you also can use the device as a wireless hotspot at no extra charge (AT&T says they’re working on it, but they don’t offer the same luxury).

As far as the battery life of the new iPad is concerned, the iPad lives up to Apple’s ambitious claims that you can do 10 hours straight of browsing the web, listening to music or watching video on this device (9 hours using LTE).

The new camera on the rear of the device also performs admirably (and is now capable of shooting full HD video). That said, it’s hard to imagine actually spending any time walking around and snapping photos with this thing, since it’s about the surface size of four regular point-and-shoot cameras.

Apple also introduced some software which plays nicely with the new iPad. On the iPad, iPhoto almost feels like a full-blown desktop application, allowing you to do all sorts of very specific editing of photos, including adjusting exposure, coloring, making repairs and more. You’re also able to collect your images (along with dates, maps and weather tiles) into virtual “journals.” Those journals can then be uploaded to iCloud and shared on the Web.

In all, the new iPad is in a class by itself. As the latest product in a lineage of devices that defined this category, the iPad continues to stand head and shoulders above the competition.

However, if you’re in the market for your first tablet, or upgrading from the original iPad or an Android device, do not hesitate. The new iPad is the most functional, easy-to-use and beautiful tablet that any company has ever produced.

Apple shares may rise more than $700 as iPad sales Boom Boom : Study

Apple Inc. (AAPL), getting a boost from anticipation of the new iPad, rose to a record today and may climb 19 percent to $700, according to analysts who raised their price targets for the stock.

At least four analysts, including Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley in New York, have increased price targets to $700 or higher in the past two weeks. Apple, based in Cupertino, California, rose 3.8 percent to $589.58 at the close in New York and has gained 46 percent this year.

More are likely to boost targets as they quantify the market share of the new iPad, said Michael Walkley, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity, who raised his target to $710 yesterday. The average price target of 43 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg is $605, which could mean updates are lagging behind, he said.

“As they do their checks in the quarter and stronger numbers come through, it leads to better earnings power than we were seeing even six weeks ago,” Walkley said in an interview. “Some analysts are behind the curve on estimates.”

Shares of some Apple competitors have languished as the company takes market share. Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), which has tried competing with Apple through smartphones, tablets and personal computers, has tumbled 41 percent in the past 12 months. Nokia Oyj has fallen 40 percent. Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of BlackBerry smartphones, has dropped 79 percent.

As of today, Apple gave investors a 555 percent return in the past five years and has outperformed the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index by 543 percent. Since 2007, investors paid an average 43 percent premium for Apple’s earnings compared with the S&P 500’s earnings.

IPad Upgrade
The new iPad, set to go on sale March 16, has been upgraded with a sharper screen and faster chip as Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook seeks to widen the company’s lead in tablets over Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. (GOOG) Slashing the price of the older iPad by $100 also helps cut into competition, said Huberty, who raised her price target to $720 yesterday.

Huberty also cited the company’s expansion in emerging markets such as China and Brazil and a new TV product as reasons to lift her price target.

“Apple’s earnings power is potentially far greater than investors believe and our prior bull case model suggested,” Huberty said in a note to investors.

Aakash II launching in April at same price - Will Aakash 1 delivered to Pre-Ordered uses?

A faster, upgraded version of Aakash tablet -- touted to be the world's cheapest -- would be launched in April without any increase in price, Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal said.

Sibal said during Question Hour in Lok Sabha that Datawind will supply one lakh high speed tablets with a longer battery life and better screen.

"These higher specifications which include 700 MHz Cortex A8 processor, 3200mAH battery with three-hour usage time and a capacitative touchscreen have been necessitated to overcome the initial difficulties observed in the devices," he said.

The first phase of one lakh tablets were targeted for students in higher technical education institutions so as to further ascertain technical feedback on its operation and usability, the minister said.

To demands from members for extending the distribution of tablets to school students, Sibal said the same would be made available when the proposed National Mission of Education through ICT for Schools got necessary funds.

He said once the production capacities are built up, norms for distribution with an aim to prioritise empowerment of students, especially from disadvantaged and marginalised sections of society, through this low cost access-cum computing device would get developed.

But Doubts are still there whether Aakash one will be delivered to the Pre-ordered Customers. Will Government answer for this?

Wipro share auction raises $150 Million - results only half of target

A trust controlled by Wipro's (WIPR.NS) billionaire founder Azim Premji raised $150 million in an auction of the Indian software company's shares, roughly half of the target, clouding the outlook for a newly approved stock auction process.

Wipro, India's third-largest software services exporter, is the first private sector company to tap the share auction route that was approved in January and was aimed at avoiding expensive roadshows and saving time on secondary share sales.

The share sale came two weeks after state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp's (ONGC.NS) chaotic $2.6 billion offering fell short of the government's target to sell a 5 percent stake in the company as part of its divestment programme.

"It's shocking that a $300 million book for a company like Wipro doesn't even get fully covered. It's less to do with investor appetite and more to do with the process itself," said a senior equity banker at a U.S.-based bank in Mumbai.

Bangalore-based Wipro (WIT.N), which is also listed in New York, sold 17.8 million company shares for about 7.5 billion rupees in the auction to fund its non-profit arm, said a statement from the founders' trust late on Wednesday.

Up to 35 million Wipro shares were offered in the auction that could have raised roughly $300 million at the floor price of 418 rupees a share, which was a discount of 4.5 percent on its close price of Monday when the plan was announced.

A total of 24.8 million bids were received in the auction, the exchange data showed earlier. Many bids were rejected as their price was below the cutoff level, said a source with knowledge of the deal.

The floor price was disclosed after the close of the auction process. The Wipro share auction started at 9:15 a.m. (0345 GMT) and closed at 1:30 p.m.

"The duration of the auction process has to be increased and bids should be accepted overnight so that many overseas bidders can also participate," said the banker, declining to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media.

Analysts said investor sentiment for the Wipro auction was also dented by "blind bidding," with the company opting to disclose the floor price, or the threshold below which the bids would not be accepted, only after the close of the auction.

In January, Securities and Exchange Board of India gave permission to shareholders of the country's top 100 companies by market value to raise funds by auctioning their stakes via stock exchanges.

Wipro shares ended 1.1 percent lower at 426.05 rupees, after falling as much as 2.2 percent, while BSE Sensex closed 0.6 percent higher.

REDUCING STAKE

Founders of listed Indian companies can also tap the auction route to pare their stakes to meet the capital market regulator's directive of maintaining at least 25 percent public shareholding.

Premji and his family own about 79 percent of Wipro through various units that include the Azim Premji Trust, which sold the shares on Wednesday. The founders' stake will drop by roghly one percentage point to about 78 percent after the auction.

Proceeds from the share sale will be used to finance the education activities of the Azim Premji Foundation, a non-profit unit set up by Premji to improve the quality of education in the country, a company statement said on Monday.

Wipro, which develops software applications, integrates IT systems and manages call centres, is India's 11th most valuable company with a market capitalisation of more than $21 billion. It is part of India's $76 billion software services industry.

Citigroup Inc (C.N), Morgan Stanley (MS.N), UBS (UBSN.VX) and Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX) were hired by Wipro as brokers for the share auction process.

The BSE Sensex is up 16 percent so far this year, which has helped revive the moribund equity offerings. The benchmark had fallen nearly 25 percent last year, forcing many companies to shelve their share sale plans.

More than $5 billion has already been raised in India share sales so far in 2012, more than half of roughly $9 billion in all of 2011 from 84 issues, Thomson Reuters data showed.

Buy your iPad 3 - The New iPad from Friday 8:00 am - Apple stores to open at 8 a.m. Friday for sales of new iPads

In less than 48 hours, Apple's brick-and-mortar retail stores are scheduled to open early to sell the third-generation iPad in 10 different markets -- the U.S. (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and Britain.

Each Apple store is set to open at 8 a.m. local time instead of the usual 10 or 11 a.m. start. At many stores, iPad consumers are already lining up outside to get the hot new tablet on day one of availability.

Industry analysts are projecting that Apple could sell about 1 million iPads in the first 24 hours the devices are on sale across the 10 markets. That number is expected to grow in the coming months as businesses and consumers are expected to purchase more iPads than ever before.

Apple sold 15.43 million iPads in the last three months of 2011, up 4 million from the prior three-month period.

On March 23, Apple said Wednesday, the new iPad is set to launch in 25 more markets, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macao, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Over the weekend, Apple sold out of its release-date-delivery allotment for new iPad pre-orders, pushing the shipment times for online orders to two to three weeks.

Apple's new iPad features a touchscreen with a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution (double that offered by the first two generations of the tablet), a new 5-megapixel rear camera, a quad-core graphics processor and, in some models, the ability to connect to faster 4G wireless networks.

The price of the new iPad will match the price points set by the iPad 2 and the first-generation iPad.

A Wi-Fi-only 16-gigabyte third-generation iPad will sell for $499, while a 32-gigabyte model will run $599 and a 64-gigabyte unit will fetch $699. If you want a 4G LTE capable new iPad, the prices are: 16-gigabytes for $629, 32-gigabytes for $729 and 64-gigabytes for $829.

Pintrest - Your Online Pinboard - The new beginning in Social Networking

Christina Gomez has carefully displayed her dream cribs, rockers and mobiles on Pinterest, the increasingly popular online bulletin board. Never mind that she doesn’t have a baby.

“Ah, Pinterest – where I dress my unborn children and decorate my imaginary mansion,” the San Antonio political consultant said – on Twitter – when asked about the website.

Gomez is addicted. And she’s not alone. The social site where users can “pin” images and follow others’ collections has surged in recent months to become the 16th most-visited site in the United States, according to the Web information company Alexa. That’s a higher rank than CNN.com.

Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann, who grew up in Iowa collecting bugs and stamps, said on Tuesday that his goal is to help people discover things that they didn’t know they wanted. He said there are plenty of people trying to tell you what you want via billboards, catalogs or Internet ads.

“But no one has really made a lot of progress toward building a place you want to go every day to discover things that feel like they were hand-picked just for you, and that’s what I can hope we can do,” Silbermann told a packed ballroom at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive conference in Austin.

The self-deprecating Silbermann, who has rarely spoken publicly about the site he co-founded in fall 2009, described having “catastrophically small numbers” at first. Nine months in, there were fewer than 10,000 people on it, he said. He sought feedback from early users, giving some his cell phone number. And he didn’t quit.

Silbermann, who spoke repeatedly of wanting his site to be beautiful and display beautiful collections, said one goal of his was to create a service that offered timelessness in an era when people were obsessed with real-time sites like Twitter.

The new way to interact online: go to Pinterest. AP
“If something is your favourite book, it’s no less your favourite book 72 hours from now or a year from now or five years from now or 10 years from now,” he said. “It still says something about who you were then and who you want other people to know you as.”

Learning from pinning

For Gomez, who lives in a 900-square-foot home in Texas and is about to move to smaller digs in Washington, DC, Pinterest allows her to collect things – like USB drives shaped like teddy bears – without taking up precious physical space.

Like other users, she has organised her pictures into boards with titles like “Sewing Projects,” “Gift Ideas” and “For the new house. She has used it to post pictures of clothes she already owns and to learn to cook with a crock pot.

The growth of Pinterest has been fueled primarily by women, including those planning their weddings, said Robert Quigley, who teaches new media and multimedia at the University of Texas. The draw is the site’s simplicity, he said.

“The rise of Pinterest has been absolutely incredible – it just came out of nowhere,” Quigley said. “It’s so visual, it’s easy to use and simple – yet complex enough to allow you to organize the way you want.”

Pinterest isn’t only for women.

Guillaume Driscoll, 30, a design student at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, said he and his girlfriend both use the site. Before he joined a few months ago, he was interested in clothes, but “not on a level of some of my lady friends.” He’s seen that change as he’s pinned more clothes, like colorful socks and a grey cashmere sport coat from J. Crew.

“Now, I’m starting to think about it more. What is my style? What does my style say about me?” said Driscoll, who was visiting Austin for SXSW.

Silbermann said it makes sense for people to use Pinterest to explore topics that lifestyle magazines focus on — design, home decorating, cooking and fitness — but he’s also seeing new uses like political satire (say, Mitt Romney’s fake yacht collection). Museums are using Pinterest to post art collections. Some users are posting travel guides to cities.

“Every day, literally, we see at least one board where we just couldn’t have imagined how people would use it and to me, that’s really exciting,” Silbermann said.

Facebook blocks accounts with surname Chutia

The All Assam Chutia Students' Union (Aacsu) on Saturday raised serious concern against a social networking site blocking the accounts of thousands of Chutia community subscribers believing the accounts to be fake and fabricated. Chutia, pronounced Sutiya, is a community in Assam while the word is a commonly-used derogatory term in Hindi.

Addressing a press conferrence in Jorhat, Aacsu general secretary Jyotiprasad Chutia said: "'Facebook has blocked the accounts of all the subscribers belonging to the Chutia community of Assam thinking the names are false and fabricated. For Chutia being an abusive word in the Hindi language, Facebook authorities thought that the account holders are fake and fabricated. But, they are still unknown to the fact that Chutia is an ethnic tribe of Assam which has a rich historical background in the state history.

The students' organization also decided to burn an effigy of the social networking site in the five upper Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat on Monday and demanded public apology from the social networking website for their action.

''We are very unhappy with authority as they have even failed to verify the matter seriously before taking a step like blocking thousands of our accounts. We think it may be a deep-rooted conspiracy against our community and so we warn them to abstain from such acts in the future. They even failed to verify the truth when they blocked the accounts of some prominent personalities and popular artists like Krishnamoni Chutia, who belongs to our community. We protested this negligence and demanded them to reactivate our accounts immediately,'" he said. He added that there is also some other condemnable instance in the state where the word Chutia is being used as a slang word.

The organization has announced they will stage a sit in demonstration in Guwahati to pressure the government to fulfill their 26-point charter of demands. ''We have decided to stage a sit in protest at Last gate on March 15 to push our 26-point charter of demands that includes tribal status and reservation for the Chutia community in educational institutions and preservation of historic monuments of the Chutia dynasty.

Personal cloud will replace PC at centre of users' digital lives by 2014: Gartner

The reign of the personal computer as the sole corporate access device is coming to a close, and by 2014, the personal cloud will replace the personal computer at the centre of users' digital lives, according to technology researcher Gartner, Inc.

Gartner analysts said the personal cloud will begin a new era that will provide users with a new level of flexibility with the devices they use for daily activities, while leveraging the strengths of each device, ultimately enabling new levels of user satisfaction and productivity.

However, it will require enterprises to fundamentally rethink how they deliver applications and services to users, a Gartner statement said.

"Major trends in client computing have shifted the market away from a focus on personal computers to a broader device perspective that includes smartphones, tablets and other consumer devices," said Steve Kleynhans, research vice president at Gartner."Emerging cloud services will become the glue that connects the web of devices that users choose to access during the different aspects of their daily life."

The past two years have been a whirlwind in the client computing space, leaving many enterprises asking what comes next and what the environment will look like in five years, it said.

"Many call this era the post-PC era, but it isn't really about being 'after' the PC, but rather about a new style of personal computing that frees individuals to use computing in fundamentally new ways to improve multiple aspects of their work and personal lives," Kleynhans said.

Several driving forces are combining to create this new era. These megatrends have roots that extend back through the past decade but are aligning in a new way, Gartner added.

Sign Language (BSL) to Text instant converter to be available by this year end : Research in Scotland

Researchers in Scotland are designing a software program which instantly translates sign language into type which can be read on a computer screen.

The technology, the first of its kind in the world, could be available within a year and stands to fundamentally change the way deaf people communicate and help them succeed in the jobs market, the scientists said.

A normal camera is used to record the user's hand signals, which are imported into the computer program and translated into written text so that the person the user is conversing with can read it without needing to understand sign language.

Researchers now hope to develop the basic program, known as the Portable Sign Language Translator (PSLT), into an "app" which could be used on PCs, laptops, tablets, smart phones and other portable devices.

The program is being developed by Aberdeen University scientists through a spin-out company called Technabling, and could be used with a range of different sign languages including British Sign Language (BSL) which is used by up to 70,000 people in Britain.

Because there are limits on the ability of BSL to express certain concepts or terms, such as technical words and phrases used in particular job sectors, the program can also be taught to recognise an individual's personal vocabulary.

Dr Ernesto Compatangelo, computing science lecturer and founder of Technabling, said: "The aim of the technology is to empower sign language users by enabling them to overcome the communication challenges they can experience, through portable technology.

“One of the most innovative and exciting aspects of the technology is that it allows sign language users to actually develop their own signs for concepts and terms they need to have in their vocabulary, but they may not have been able to express easily when using BSL."

Dr James Christie, one of the researchers who is partially deaf and a sign language user, added: "The PSLT lowers the communication barrier between people born deaf, people who have lost their hearing very early in life, people who are losing their hearing, and hearing people – especially in face-to-face situations such as tutorials and group work."

IBM & Ingersoll Rand to launch remote energy and asset management solutions in India

IBM and Ingersoll Rand announced that they will provide remote energy and asset management solutions in India to drive greater energy efficiencies for organisations who are engaged in infrastructure creation or maintenance for high growth sectors (Commercial, Hospitality, Health, Pharma & others).

This solution leverages IBM's Intelligent Building Management ( IIBM) system (a combination of monitoring, asset management and advanced analytics) along with Ingersoll Rand's Energy optimisation technologies, to help trigger preventive and predictive maintenance to create smarter buildings, according to an IBM statement.

Buildings in India account for 30 per cent of energy consumption. Of this consumption, the major usage is due to HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning) and lighting.

As Indian economy develops and commercial infrastructure gets built, it becomes essential to drive robust initiatives to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. In the current economic scenario, with rising energy costs, organisations are facing capital and operating budget challenges. Maximising capital productivity requires increasing asset utilisation, efficiency and uptime. Similarly operating costs of energy and maintenance need to be optimised, IBM said.

Venkatesh Valluri, Chairman & President, Ingersoll Rand India said, "Ingersoll Rand has been at the forefront of driving 'Innovation and Technology Convergence' and to us this means bringing together organisations and technologies on a common platform and converging them to drive profitable sustainability practices. This partnership is a strategic initiative where IBM and Ingersoll Rand are combining their strengths in operations and management systems to bring end-to-end managed services to customers."

"This partnership with Ingersoll Rand reaffirms our commitment by using intelligent data to build Smarter Buildings that are accountable for energy and carbon resource use, helping create a sustainable environment," said Nipun Mehrotra, Vice President & General Manager, Sales & Business Development, IBM India/South Asia.

'Kony 2012' becomes the most viral video in History with more than 100 Million views [Study]

With more than 70 million views in five days, Kony 2012, a 30-minute documentary about Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony, has become the most viral video in history, according to one researcher.

In a blog post, Visible Measures found Kony outpaced other record-setting viral videos.
For instance, the video featuring Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, hit 70 million views in six days. Old Spice’s “Responses” campaign didn’t hit 70 million until five months after it launched.

Visible Measures got its figures by tracking not just the original Vimeo version of Kony, but also responses to the video. By March 8, three days after Kony went live, there were 200 such responses, which ran six minutes on average. The video has also netted more than 500,000 comments.

Despite the rapid rise of Kony 2012, the video has brought a shower of criticism to Invisible Children, the organization behind it. Many of the negative critiques have been targeted at Invisible Children’s practices as an organization, not whether Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, is a war criminal.

In particular, a Tumblr blog called Visible Children, outlined how just 32% of Invisible Children’s money went to direct services, while the rest went to staff salaries and other overhead.

Invisible Children responded with a blog post outlining its expenses. The post didn’t dispute the 32% figure, but illustrated how another 26% went to “awareness programs.”

Priced at Rs 12,999, the tablet works on Reliance High Speed Data CDMA network in over 1,000 towns, said Mr Rakesh Singh, Hub Head, Wireless Business, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Reliance Communication. “We are the first telecom operator in India to offer tablet on both the 3G and CDMA networks. This will strengthen our leadership position in tablet,” he told newspersons without any company specific numbers.

In mobile service, two main competing network technologies that telecom companies use are Global System for Mobile Communications and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).

The 7-inch Reliance CDMA Tab is a fully loaded Android tablet. It is also loaded with 512 MB RAM and a micro SD external storage and support up to 32 GB of content storage. It comes with a 2.0 MP rear camera and a front camera catering to both businessmen and the youth.

Mr Rajaram said that the tablet is pre-loaded with 15 most popular applications to provide information services, communication services, entertainment and social networking.

As an introductory offer, the tablet is available with post paid plans offering discounts of up to 40 per cent on the regular rates. All the plans will come with default voice tariff plan of 50p per minute for all intra and inter cities and 50p for local and national SMS.

While Reliance has coverage of 300 cities in the 3G network, it has coverage of over 1,000 towns in the CDMA networks, which will provide broadband access of Internet with a speed of over 3 MBPS.

The tablet penetration in India is likely to reach 8.3 lakh units by 2015 from the present 1.6 lakh. However, to reach that figure, pricing will be an important factor. With a price of Rs 12,999, the Reliance tablet offers an ‘attractive proposition’ for consumers, he said.

There are over 30 tablet brands available in India with price ranging between Rs 24,000 and Rs 46,000. There is a demand for sub Rs 20,000, he said.

CNN in Talks to Acquire Social Media Blog Mashable, reports Sources

CNN, a unit of Time Warner, and Mashable are in advanced talks that may lead to an acquisition of the social news Web site, three people with knowledge of the talks said.

Mashable, which specializes in stories about technology and social media, could bolster CNN.com, which is one of the most popular news Web sites in the United States. An acquisition of Mashable would make a statement about CNN’s interest in start-ups and social media.

A blogger for Reuters, Felix Salmon, reported on Sunday night that a CNN acquisition of Mashable could be announced on Tuesday. Early Monday morning, officials at CNN denied that an announcement would be made on Tuesday and declined to comment on the potential acquisition.

On Monday morning, Pete Cashmore, the chief executive of Mashable, e-mailed his staff to say that the “rumor going around on Twitter that Mashable will be acquired this week” is not true. The e-mail didn’t address the ongoing talks between his company and CNN, and left the door open for an acquisition announcement the week after.

“Mashable’s one of the hottest brands here at SXSW and there’s bound to be rumors coming out of the festival,” Mr. Cashmore wrote to the staff. “We’ve had a great presence here and I look forward to updating you guys when we get back.”

The people with knowledge of the talks insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak by their employers. It is possible that the acquisition will not be completed, some of the people cautioned.

Nonetheless, news of the potential acquisition spread rapidly among attendees at South by Southwest, a technology conference here that celebrates the kind of old-and-new-media combination that CNN and Mashable would represent. Both companies have big groups of staffers at the conference and both have been hosting parties, sometimes with other media partners.

Mashable, which is seven years old and is privately held, would be CNN.com’s largest acquisition to date. Last fall, CNN.com acquired Zite, a company that made an iPad app that determines what its users want to read and view, for a price that was estimated to be between $20 million and $25 million. Mashable would cost CNN far more to acquire.

Mashable is best-known in Internet circles for covering social media and technology, though it has expanded recently to include business and entertainment coverage. It has hired aggressively and has partnered with a number of mainstream news sites, including CNN and ABC News. CNN already syndicates some of its stories.

There was a social media hint about the potential acquisition early Monday morning when Adam Ostrow, the executive editor of Mashable, “liked” on Facebook Mr. Salmon’s story for Reuters. Mr. Ostrow did not respond to a request for comment.

Instagram hits 27M users, founder confirms anticipated Android app - www.instagr.am

Instagram announced that it hit 27 million users today, and continues its ongoing mantra that the photo sharing app will come to Android “really soon.”

Instagram is a photo sharing social network that only exists on the Apple iPhone. It allows people to take pictures, assign filters, and then post them to a variety of social networks including Facebook and Twitter. In November 2011, the company had already amassed 13 million members in its 13 months of existence. That number has now grown by 14 million in the last 5 months. Founder Kevin Systrom, who spoke about the achievement at interactive conference South By Southwest, did not disclose how many of those 27 million users were actually active users.

He did, however, wave a phone for the audience that supposedly had the Instagram Android application on it. The application has been long anticipated by Android users who have waited nearly a year and a half for the iteration. But its estimated time of arrival remains the same as always: “coming soon.” Systrom did note that the application was fast, however, and the company has “been able to put together one of the most incredible Android apps you will ever see.”

Despite the long turn-around time for Instagram’s Android app, the company may be looking into a Windows 7 phone version.

It is also rumored that the company is raising a $40 million round of funding that could rocket its valuation from $25 million up to $500 million. It hasn’t yet figured out a business model, however, at least not one that it has mentioned publicly. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, venture capitalists are hesitant to jump into the funding pool without first knowing what Instagram’s financial potential is. The company lacks advertising — a possible business model — as of now, and may be hard p
