CAT 2011 Results - IIM CAT Exam Results 11 January 2012 - www.catiim.in

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a Computer Based Test in Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) use the test as an important component in selecting students for the business administration programs. The test is conducted every year by one of the IIM's based on a policy of rotation.

In August 2011 it was announced that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) would use CAT, instead of JMET, as part of the student selection process of their MBA and Masters in Management programmes from the academic year 2012-14.

CAT 2011 conducted during a 20 day testing window in the months of October and November has concluded.

CAT 2011 Results are expected to be announced on January 11, 2012.

CAT replaces JMET in IIT, IISc

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have withdrawn the joint management entrance test (JMET) used for admitting students into the institute’s department of management studies and have replaced it with the common admission test (CAT).

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee, and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore will henceforth use CAT scores as part of the student selection process for MBA and M. Mgmt programmes from the 2012-13 academic year.

A recent review revealed that JMET was similar to CAT and the effort to organise JMET each year seemed enormous with just 40,000 candidates taking this test every year.

“The intersection of candidates who take both CAT and JMET in a single year is quite large. The decision to use CAT for admission to IITs and IISc will minimize the test preparation and financial burden on candidates. CAT is an ideal fit for IITs as it is a well evolved, established, standardized and widely accepted entrance exam for admission into PG programmes in management in India. It is also conceived and developed by the IIMs, which serve as the benchmark for management education in our country and in highly regarded national institutions like the IITs”, Prof. L S Ganesh, former HOD of management studies department at IIT Madras, said.

Welcoming this move, Prof Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 convenor said, “This is a major initiative that brings two premier higher education systems together. We anticipate that this will result in closer tie-ups and collaborative research work that will provide both sets of Institutions a competitive edge in the long run.”

The new system is also expected to help the IIMs cope effectively with the increasing number of candidates every year. While around 95,000 candidates took CAT in 2003, the number rose to about 250,000 last year, reflecting a growth of over 163% and bringing the administrative system under severe pressure. “With the online test, CAT will be similar to the GMAT test in its process Here’s the gist of information that the IIMs have released till date: * The CAT will be held online for the year 2011 * Prometric ETS has been awarded the contract for conducting the test * CAT 2011 will be conducted over a period of 10 days at the end of 2011-05-11 * Relevant details regarding the structure and the conduct of the examination to be released with the advertisement (normally in the month of July) * Mr Subhashish Gupta, admission chairperson IIMB has said that the possibility of CAT 2011 being computer adaptive is quite remote. * In all probability there will be 3 tests in a day.
